P45 trouble

I'm starting a new job today, after being in an unpaid apprenticeship where I wasn't actually employed so I have no paperwork from that. I left my last "real" job two years ago and had no problems getting a P45, but I've since lost it in a house fire. I have a pro forma version, but it's a bit singed and missing some info, and I've heard Revenue don't accept those anyway.

The other thing is that I changed my name while I was with my last employer but he never updated my details, so the P45 had the wrong name on it anyway. It wasn't a last minute thing before I left, I worked for him for more than a year after the change but he just never did it even though I told him multiple times.

Do I just get on to the tax office for a tax certificate in the new name?

You dont need your P45, get the PAYE ref of your new employer and ring the tax office with that and your PPS number. Ask that your credits and cut off be assigned to new employer. It then comes through overnight to new employer.

The P45 is only useful if you're using it in the same year it was issued anyway so definitely no need to worry about that.
As Toadfly says it's easy to sort out with the tax office if you ring them and have your employers tax number - I did it recently with no issues.

Do Revenue know about your new name? If not, then you'd best tell them about it while you're at it.
