Back in Co Clare starting on Wednesday in Dromoland, culminating in Ennis on Sunday

    Full route details here

Provisional Entry List - 24 teams and over 100 riders including teams from the USA, GBR, DEN, FRA, NED, NOR along with a lot of home grown talent

Good luck to everyone taking part in what looks like a very open event. The standard of this race and indeed its organisation improves each year and there's no reason to believe this year will be any different.

Weather is looking promising for far for the opening stages. Looking forward to it, will be heading there for Sat & Sun, best of luck to all those racing and organising!

More teams from the UK than Ireland... think they've coped on to the great racing we have here!

    Thursdays coastal stage is class.

Lads, wouldn't you love something like an Ennis (aka Gorey) 3 day that has it as a stage.

saw somthing on twitter that europsort will be showing highlights of it at some stage. think they did the same last year

Is TG4 showing this or is it like the race that's spoken about but not seen

Don't think they are covering it

British Eurosport has confirmed a 30 minute highlight show to be broadcast on 25 September

Thinking of skipping the GreatDublinBikeRide to catch Ras na nBan on Sunday in Clare. Could easily get the ferry to Kilrush ... what time are they leaving Dromoland?
Trying to plan where I'll link in to watch but would need the time of commencement if anyone knows?

Have travelled to watch men racing throughout the country, but never seen the women race, yet, shamefully! :o

    Many Thanks,
    kerry4sam

Just seen that the prize fund is €5000 which is pretty poor when you see that the men's Rás had a prize fund of €42000.

Ain't nobody in it for the money, that's for sure.

    Spectacular stages this year.
    Go watch it.
    Bring your friends.
    Ring Joe Duffy.
    Buy a t-shirt.
Then sit back and watch the sponsorship money roll in for next year.

Sunday's stage: 85km Dromoland to Ennis, rolling out at 11:20am. Would definitely recommend trying to catch it! @kerry4sam, if you're coming in from Killimer, you could probably catch the action between Leabasheeda and Kilmurray-McMahon.

Details here and in this more detailed route book. There's also a "where to watch" section in the website for each of the six stages.

Can't wait, best of luck to all lining out this evening!

Bring some wet gear. Gonna be rain on friday and sunday but may get away with only a shower or two on sat...

This evening's stage was won in a bunch sprint by Grace Garner (GBR - RST Racing Team) with Irish girl and member of the national team pursuit squad Lydia Boylan (WNT Team) 2nd. Garner's team mate Mel Lowther (also GBR) was 3rd. First domestic rider was Eve McCrystal (Garda CC)

I saw them last night. Maghera is a tough climb and they glided up it like it was a bump in the road. They are amazing to watch. I'm marshalling for it on Sunday. No idea where I'll be stationed.

The Rás is a UCI 2.2 event. Rás na mBán has no UCI status so it's not going to attract the same level of sponsorship.

@Raam Did you write the stage report? The headline smacks of your inimitable style:
Garner's Gallop Secures An Post Rás na mBan Stage One

    I hope not - I'm not sure I could stand 5 days of 'Boylan's Breakaway' and 'Dickinson's Dash' ;)

I'd have used "Grabs" rather than "Secures".

Lydia Boylan and Eve McCrystal in an 8 woman break. Looks a very strong group, as it also includes one of the pre-race favourites Nikki Juniper and track world points champion Stefanie Pohl

Report from today's stage and the results/positions

Dane Emma Norsgaard Jorgensen of Team Rytger took the stage and pink jersey. Eve McCrystal and Lydia Boylan are each 29s behind the leader in equal 4th place. McCrystal leads the best Irish based rider category and Boylan is the best British based rider after Stage 2

I see one rider picked up a €20 fine for littering!

Weather for tomorrow looks a little "challenging" with heavy rain forecast

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 6,857 Mod ✭✭✭✭eeeee

Unfortunate timing for a touch of wheels for McCrystal. Great ride by Ciara Doogan to come in in 20th, she's only 16 or 17? Savage stuff!

Weather in Scarriff today is certainly "interesting"!

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,456 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

Grace Garner took her second stage victory in a group sprint into Scarriff this afternoon. Race leader Emma Norsgaard Jorgensen took second with Lydia Boylan the first Irish rider home in 4th. Eve McCrystal was in the lead group and retains her lead in the Irish-based rider category

Race report here and full stage results here

Wouldn't quite say the rain was "torrential" as suggested in the report, but it was certainly steady and I am sure a few riders were thinking they could have been doing other things on the initial climb out of Scarriff - maybe 30 or so managed to get themselves dropped over the first 20km of the day. Most of those dropped managed to limit the damage by eventually re-grouping with the last group of 5 coming in just over 31 mins behind the leaders

Tomorrow's TT looks like it may be crucial in determining the final winner. Jorgensen is only 4s ahead of Stefanie Pohl in the overall standings with Eileen Roe another 3s further back. Then there's a group of 9 including Boylan and McCrystal only 29s behind the leader

Damn near choked on my broccoli this evening when the half 6 RTÉ radio 1 sports bulletin finished with "In today's today's Vuelta the stage was won by blah blah blah, and so-and-so won today's stage of Rás na mBan"

I wasn't really listening, so it was the last three syllables prompted the Heimlich manoeuvre.

Amazing to have it so easily and nonchalantly referred to in mainstream media!

Stephanie Pohl took the lead after the TT and retained it in tonight's crit

    Reports:
    TT
    Crit

Updated standings are not yet up but Pohl had a 7s lead over Eileen Roe after the TT which was won by Natalie Grinczer of Fusion RT, yet another impressive performance by someone in the U23 category. Swedish teenager Elinor Huusko took the crit from teammate and former race leader (and yet another youngster, at 16 years old!) Emma Norsgaard Jorgensen

I have been really impressed with the quality of young racers in this event with U23s featuring in most of the finishes as well as the overall standings and about a third of the field are in the U23 classificatiion. It looks like women's cycling has a very bright future

You need a slow shutter speed and pan the camera as the rider passes trying to keep them in the centre of the shot. Doesn't always work but gives a real feeling of speed when it does.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,550 ✭✭✭Myksyk

That's right ... it's called 'panning' ... camera set to Shutter priority or manual ... usually between 1/15 to 1/60 of a second depending on the speed of your subject (this was shot at 1/40 I think)... aperture around f/8 ... AI Servo for focussing ... focus on rider's face and move with her precisely as she passes. Stops the cyclist keeping her sharp while allowing the camera to catch the background movement.
