Neglected potbound cacti - help please

I'm afraid that in the scheme of things, my cacti have been neglected.
They are seriously potbound and their roots are almost reaching the top of the pot.

I've read that they prefer to be in a smaller pot, and to repot one size bigger. However with them being so badly potbound do I still follow this advice?? Also is there a specific compost I need to use?

Repot into a good free draining mix, water and job done.
If it's a really thorny one I roll up a sheet of newspaper kind of the shape of a belt and wrap this around the plant lift plant with one hand and use the other to do the potting.
    Hope this helps/ makes sense!
