How to dye silk?

wondering if anyone can advise? I bought dye online to dye a silk dress. The original colour was a wishy washy light yellow/cream. The dye was supposed to be emerald green. I would have been happy with any dark colour!

    It's luminous neon green!

What can i do? I don't want to spend a lot on it. Is there anything natural I could use to get a dark colour! Any dark colour!!

    Thanks

If it turned out bright green it's possible that there was too much fabric for the amount of dye you used - there's usually a colour chart included in the box that should give you an indication of the end result depending on the type of fabric and the weight.

You could try dying it again but using two packs of dye, or you could dye it again with a blue/navy dye that would mix itself to the colour already there. You could also get a navy and a green pack of dye and use them together to get a darker green.

Just make sure you use a dye that's specific for silk and wool.

Could I ask what brand you used?

Hi new home! Thanks for the reply. It was unbranded from eBay I'm afraid!
It was supposed to be for silk. The dress is only light, so I measured it carefully. It should have taken a quarter of the pack. When I saw that the colour was light ( and luminous!) I left it simmer for longer, and then added the remaining dye!
    Still bright green!!!

Yikes, maybe it was the dye, so. You're absolutely positive the fabric is natural silk, are you? That would also definitely affect the final colour.

I'll pm you with some suggestions as I don't know if I'd be allowed to name specific brands here, but I've dyed lots of clothes throughout the years, the worst were a pair of my father's trousers which I had to re-do a few times 'cause he didn't like the colour, but I ended up with a lovely shade in-between petrol and bottle green.

Ah thank you! Yes, definitely silk. It's a nice shape for holidays, but a very insipid colour. Now it's a horrible bile green! I think it must have been the dye!

Don't worry, by the time you're done everyone will be green with envy. :pac:
