Installing a mixer tap with shower-head...

Hi-ya! :) I wanted to ask advice about changing the taps on my bath? Is it a job that I could do myself? Or would I need a plumber?

I have a bath with two single taps. But I'm sick of having stupid baths... :( and can't afford to install an electric shower at the moment. So, I'd like to install a mixer tap, with shower-head.

I've priced mixer taps. Prices start around €50, and go up to €300, and beyond... I have my eye on one that costs around €100, it seems like a good one.

So, are mixer taps difficult to install? I guess it probably depends... I've watched videos on YouTube that show how to change bath taps, and it looks quite straight forward. But I'm guessing it won't be quite so easy if I tried to do it myself...

Is it a big job? Do I need to turn the water off at mains before I start? Neither my boyfriend, nor I, are particularly good at DIY, but we're desperate to install a shower. So, I reckon its worth trying.

*Also, I wondered if anyone knows how much it would cost if I got a plumber in to install the mixer tap?*

Would a plumber be expensive? I know it's probably hard to give a price without seeing the job. But I was just hoping for a ball-park-figure?

I'd be really, REALLY greatful for any advice whatsoever. What are the "do's" and "don'ts."

Thank-you for reading my comment. Any, and all, advice will be much appreciated! :)

You would be better to get a Plumber or a local handyman who should be able to do it for you. Let the plumber help you decide which mixer as some are only for pressurized systems. you do need to turn off both the hot and cold water first. But you also need to have a wide selection of tools to hand, as removing old taps can be quite stubborn. If the plumber is quite local 50 to 60 Euro should cover it.

Thanks so much, Sky! I really appreciate your advice.

I didn't realize that not all mixer taps are the same. Thanks so much for letting me know. I'll deffo ask a plumber before I buy anything.

€50 to €60 is affordable. And I understand that a plumber would have to see the job before giving me an accurate quote. But I was worried that it would cost mad money. So, fingers crossed I'll be able to get it done sooner, rather than later.

I guess the best way to find a plumber is to Google "plumber," along with the area I live in. Or is there a thread on Boards.ie were we can find trusted plumbers?

It's must be great to know a good, reliable handyman. They're worth their weight in gold!

Thanks again for your advice, Sky. You're a star. :)
