These are very strong and generally reliable cars, I've had my e39 525i for the last 11 months now, love it. That one is properly taken care of and has some nice upgrades and a good factory spec, asking price is pretty much what I'd expect to pay for a car of that standard from an enthusiast.

I'd you go to look, check for rust in the arches and behind mud flaps, the boot lid key hole and where the plate lights are.

150k miles wouldn't be considered an awful lot for these cars, its barely run in with that! :)

The extensive service history would make it a fairly safe bet, I think you'd get a great car for the money. However, to be on the safe side have a mechanic inspect it as well.

    Good luck!

    E39 are a great car
Rust and few electrical gremlins is the only big problems with them and the cooling system

With that service history I would snap his hand off. That's an enthusiasts car and the mods and specialist jobs like the swirl flap removal show it has been meticulously cared for.
Last decent BMW made IMO (although I prefer the E34) mechanically it was built to last, not like the modern breed which have been shaved to bare minimum to save money in production.
It helps too that it is gut wrenchingly nice looking.

She looks lovely. I'd nearly take it myself.

I have my 1998 E39 523i for over 11 years and I have to see rust yet. As with most modern cars some control units seem to go after this length of time. I service this car every year (10 to 12k) and I had very little trouble considering age and how long I'm driving it.

Weaknesses I have personally experienced over those years are as follows:
    - ABS module replaced
    - Alternator control module reconditioned
    - Front suspension bushings replaced 2 or 3 times, they don't like speed ramps at all
    - Headlights are prone to gathering condensation, adjusters go brittle
    - Boot wiring loom developing breaks due to mechanical stress over time
    - Bearings in the interior air blowers, whirring noise at high revs
    - Couple of wheel speed sensors replaced
    - Fuel pump replaced
    - Starter motor replaced
    - Driver side rubber door seals deteriorated
    - Cup holders are sh1te and tend to break

At 17 years of age she is still tight and solid and sits on the road like a brick. She comes into her own on the motorway where sh'e like a train.

150k isn't that big for a 530d. You'll struggle to get one with less, I sold mine earlier this year with 183k on it and it drove like new.

They're not a deep dish but they are dished, most E39 wheels bar some base spec ones had dish on them, I find only dished wheels suit it for the most part.

If I was hanging around I'd be definitely considering that 530d... The wheels alone are worth a pretty Penney......

    +1

Forum cars come up for sale less often than you'd think. If you're interested & it's in budget, definitely go view. Don't expect a whole lot of movement on price.

€600 or so for a clean set of genuine M Parallels so not a crazy amount but more than standard Style 66s!

gorgeous car, from a genuine seller... Price like the other said, what I would expect as an asking price from an enthusiast for that particular example. The bro bought a 2001 530i from another member in cork recently, just watch for rust as has been mentioned and the usual bmw cooling issues...

Other than that the E39 is a fantastic, solid car...

Op do you need a diesel, what are your requirements? Was just browsing bmwdrivernet myself, there is an alternative below the E60 530d, similar mileage to one you posted...
