Hi. I have a 04 Almera that needs some fettling for NCT. I know it needs front shocks, some tyres and possibly a balljoint or track rod end. I'm looking for a good reliable independent garage that will be able to do prep it up for a good price and will be able to provide me with a courtesy car while they have it. Prefereably someone in Balllincollig - Douglas - South Ring side would suit me.

    Thanks.

I use Link Road Motors in Ballincollig myself find them good on price and straight with you too. Not sure if they have courtesy car tho as I can walk to and from there so never needed one. Getting service Tuesday now and doing all the belts and waterpump too.

i'd put in for the test first and get a list of jobs actually needed rather than risk having it go back to the garage for more work, and risk them doing work not needed

I know what you mean but i know for a fact that the shocks are gone so no point having to put it through knowing it will incur a retest fee. I plan on fixing the known faults, ie the shocks and the rattling bushing/balljoint and see if it will pass.

I use Cork Auto Service on ship street, by penrose Wharf, always good service and very reasonable, they can also collect the car from you if you give then abit of notice.. ask for chris..

And what about the cost of having to bring it back to a garage for more work if it fails anyway?

Well if I put it through as is, I know 100% it will fail and require paid retest.

I can fix the shocks etc, put it through and it has a fair chance at passing. And if it does fail, sure I would have had to pay the cost of the additional repairs anyway.

the re-test fee at €28 is a lot cheaper than putting it in the garage for work that may or may not need doing.

The shocks do need doing. It's like driving a bouncy castle and it rattles badly.

So what if the op has to? The items the op listed are obvious if they are gone and they will more than likely fail the test if not replaced. They are safety items anyway so I fail to see a reason not to get them changed if they need replacing.

It's all hit and miss with them anyway. Last time the car passed with a clean bill of health despite one of the back tyres being very badly worn on one side. I think the wire might even have been showing.
