So lads do any of you count your putts in a round?

I wouldn't consider myself to be a great golfer and putting is probably the best part of my round. I play off 16 at the moment.
My lowest number of putts so far this year in a full round is 27.

    What's yours.

Not really, I could putt brilliantly one day and crap the next and still have the same amount of putts.

Don't normally count putts, I do count up and downs.

Unless your taking GIR into account too your number of putts won't give a true reflection of your putting.
Hit every green in reg with 36 putts is level par. Miss every green with 36 putts is +18

And even at that you don't have enough info imo.
You could hit a GIR and have a great 2 putt from 25ft or a terrible 2 putt from 5 feet

I've improved my putting recently through practice. 3 putts are killers though, especially from decent positions. My aim is to eliminate 3 putts from a round. Yet to do it though.

    I lose count...

I use an app on my phone called GolfLogix. Apart from giving me GPS distances to the green it also gives you the option of entering your score with things like fairway hit/left/right, number of putts and number of chips.

It's free to install and you can continue to use it with a limited feature set (the above being those features) for free. You can also log in online and look at your data.

So my best putting performance is 35 this year.

No not on the putting surface

Putting off the green is just another form of chipping so do not count them.
My 2 best rounds of 73 and 74 I had 19 and 27 putts, the first day I hit every fringe not many greens the second lots of greens. Stats at the best of times are to be taken with a pinch of salt.
Proximity to the hole is a much better measure of your iron play on the fringe 10 foot from a flag is always much better than 25 foot away on the green.
Same with up and downs your stats maybe Crap but if u are missing greens on the short side 30 foot from the hole u are never getting up and down. It's not your short game that's the problem even though your stats make it look that way.

Only puts on the green should be counted. Puts from off the green should be considered as chipping the ball as mentioned earlier. My lowest number of puts this year is 26 but that was on a day when I was missing greens and my chipping was working well getting me close to the hole!! So number of puts is not a good measure of putting ability in my view. A better measure might be the number of puts holed from distances such as 6+/8+/10+ feet etc minus number of 3 + puts... or something like that!! Another might be to only count puts for GIR's, divide by no of GIR's the multiply by 18... or something like that. Has anyone seen any similar systems??
