What do ye make of that whole area?

I went for a cycle last Friday evening along the quays heading out to Dublin Port, and once I got past the Custom House everything seemed to stop. The road was quieter, less people around, it was great!

I decided to check out more of the place so I took a left up "New Wapping St" and onto Sheriff Street Upper, and I took these 2 pictures with my phone

After that I cycled on a bit up towards Croker and back around to Dorset Street. There was something about the peace and quiet around the area that I really liked. But I was left thinking about a few things:

Is there much available accomodation around that area? (I'm not actually interested myself, just curious)
Is it a 'rough' area? I began to think it was almost too quiet, and perhaps too derelict in certain places
Are there any plans for the vacant areas out that general direction?
Is there much history to it?

    Any comments are appreciated!

The Docklans SDZ will mean a radical addition of offices and apartments. It's dead on the weekends because there's currently plenty of office space and few apartments. Although new developments are supposedly going to address this.

parts of it are a bit of a wasteland. the area around the train line is deserted and then from pwc down to the 3 arena hasnt been developed yet. alot of that waterfront was industrial buildings and warehouses up to ten or so years ago and developers tried to buy sites to developments.
