Personal Toll expense in company vehicle

Not sure if this is the right forum for this:
If I use a company vehicle and I go through a toll bridge during personal time, I owe the company for the toll charge as the vehicle is on a company tag. Do I owe them the ex VAT charge or the inc VAT charge. If its the INC VAT charge then the company will get the value of the VAT back twice essentially.

In theory they shouldn't claim back the VAT on the personal tolls because (1) you have reimbursed them in full and (2) it wasn't a business trip.

In practice it will be more trouble than it's worth for the company people to split out the personal from the business trips when they're claiming back the VAT so maybe you could discuss it with them and come to a satisfactory arrangement.

Thanks for the reply. Yes sounds like a plan.

Be careful here. Push too hard and they could say no more personal use of company cars. For the sake of the few cent it might not be worth rocking the boat.

It's a fair point but in practice employers prefer the vehicles to be taken away by the employees outside of hours and at weekends, otherwise they would have to garage them and their insurance would be a lot higher. You'd also have the problem of flat batteries on Monday mornings because someone left something switched on or plugged in!

For sales people and senior execs. in the UK and Ireland, a company car is part of the package, including use outside of business hours.
