Picking up a new bike this evening, a Felt F85X.
Basic enough CX bike, but Carbon fork and Tiagra should be a step up from my current Defy 5 commuter..

Plan is to fit some proper mudguards, my SPD’s and make it my winter hack.

The bike comes stock with a set of Vittoria Cross XL Pro tyres fitted.
They look quite chunky and have a fair bit of thread as opposed to my usual slicks or Gatorskins..

The majority of my riding on this will be canal path, road, cycle path etc..should I ditch the Vittorias and go back to Gator Skins?
Would they be lethal on a wet road? Being designed for mud and all..

    Cheers
    Pete

    P.S Love new bike days : )
    Roll on 5pm…

They won't do cornering in the wet but will be fine for plodding along l.

I'd ditch them in favour of something more road friendly, any of the hard shell tyres would be suitable.

BTW lovely bike, are they heavy? Do you mind me asking what kinda money you paid for it? I'm eligible for the BTW scheme again next year and thinking on something suitable for the countless forest trails at my back door.

Thats kind of what I was thinking. Maybe a 700x32 Gatorskin or similar.

The list price of the bike is 1349€. As it was the last 2015 model I got it for €1099. A decent deal I think.

Thanks, yeah I like the look of it too. Wasnt keen on the colour at first but im coming around to that too. Its listed as weighing 10.25kg or so.. but I havent weighed it yet.

I like the idea of a the CX bike for commuting and keep my road bike for spins and weekend, but you sacrifice some kit level for a CX as far as I can see. So a similar priced road bike (€1100) would come with Shimano 105 like say a Defy 1, and for €1350 I would expect an aluminium frame bike to maybe have Ultegra. But looking at CX bikes including this one, Genesis and Kona at the same price point they were Tiagra 10spd, some even had aluminium forks..

Swap them out, no point using CX tyres if not riding off-road. They are slower, have to be a bit more careful on the corners if riding on tarmac and you will just wear away the tread.

Keep the tyres in case you are ever inclined to try cyclocross.
