Japanese 12 Year Old Hibiky Suntory Whisky

Whilst on holidays in Brittany over the summer I stumbled upon a wine and whiskey store that had an amazing selection of both. I've always wanted to try a Japanese whisky so was recommended this by the owner a very knowledgeable chap who had lived in Japan for 12 years. It's one of the most impressive whiskey's that I've had, I must say. Just wondering if anyone has tried it or other Japanese whiskey's and what your thoughts are on them and if you know if these can be sourced in Ireland.

Japanese stuff is good, but dear. Usually available in specialist offlicences - Suntory stuff should be easier to get these days considering they own Kilbeggan/Cooley distilleries but it hasn't really filtered through.

The Celtic Whiskey Shop is out of stock of Hibiki but does have a range of Nikka: http://www.celticwhiskeyshop.com/index.php?route=product/search&search=nikka

It's getting harder to find, and afford, the Nikka whiskies with age statements these days. They're releasing more NAS stuff, like the Hibiki Harmony because of pressure on stocks. The Yoichis have shot up in price as a result, at least the age statement ones.

The Hibiki is a favourite of mine. Part matured in plum brandy casks, or something similar. The new Harmony is supposed to be pretty nice, though I've not tasted it yet.

Bought a bottle of The Nikka 12 in Japan recently, for about €35, pretty tasty stuff. http://www.nikka.com/products/blended/thenikka12/

Also drank a lot of Hakushu 12 while over there, fantastic.

The Hibiki 12 year old is a lovely dram. I typically buy a bottle when I am over in France with missus visiting the Outlaws. It cost €50 last time in Cora but from my perspective it is nearly on par with Redbreast 21 Year as my favourite Whiskey.

The only downside is that it only comes in a 500ml so it disappears far too quickly.

Got a Bottle of Nikki Taketsuri Pure Malt as a present recently. It has no age statement and is a little rough neat but mellows with a little water.
