Damaged Rim Options - Wheel Builders

    Hi Guys,

You will see from attached photos 2 small rim cracks in a rear Planet X 60mm Clincher.

LBS wouldn't tighten the spokes to repair a buckle as they were afraid they would pull through. There is (was) about 380 worth of wheel here and I'm wondering are there non binnable options.

For example could a superglue be poured on to the rim, wheel straightened and I could then designate it for just TT or solo use where you are less likely to sustain pothole hits ?

Or are there any wheel builders out there who have rims they feel they could put on for a reasonable cost ?

I rang Planet X and the guy I was speaking to's advice was that given the cost of a new rim I'd be better buying one of their newer models.... fat chance of that.

    Thanks.

Get a new rim from Hong Fu/ Yishun (Asian Cycle Express) / Light Bicycle and get it rebuilt. That crack will only extend and leave you stranded somewhere.

Will probably need new spokes so really you'd only be saving the hubs. Are the hubs worth saving?

Cracked spoke hole = dead rim IMO.

Yeah in reality you will only be spending a few extra quid to be buying a brand new wheel.

Thanks guys, that seems to be the message I am getting across the board. Hub isn't bad but nothing special. Though I did get bearings replaced in it last year.

Did have a rim crack on a krysium a few years ago but it was in warranty and was rebuilt for me.

If you can match the rim's ERD measurement you should be able to re-use spokes. Exceptions are where there is crash damage when you don't know if a spoke has been over-stressed.
