Anyone currently driving one? Any real world mpg stats etc. The usual manufacture info claims 47mpg. Any areas of the car I should be concerned about in terms of potentially giving trouble.

Moving from a 2011 Passat Tdi 140BHP. No longer require the use of a diesel. So I know MPG will be massively different.

Did a search but nothing showed up, will scan through the buying section.

As OSI said, check out the big thread in the Buying sub-forum. Forget the manufacturer MPG claims, they are pie in the sky. I would have typically averaged 34-35 mpg on mine... it would drop much lower, into the low to mid 20's if in constant stop-start traffic or if you were really really pushing on.
40MPG+ is achievable if you drive like Miss Daisy ;)

    No reliability concerns whatsoever.

    Thanks for the replies

I found the sub-forum on the Mk7 GTI. Interesting read. I drove the GTI last Tuesday great drive. I got a great spec'd Passat 2.0TDi great in terms of mileage, but I'm not doing enough to justify having a big car and also having a diesel when you consider problems with DMF and DPF etc. Plus I'm only 29 and want a fun car:D

Gotta have a Golf GTi once in your lifetime. I miss my Mk5 sometimes!

I know you've not had the R long, but how would the MPG compare? Not that MPG is a concern to anyone buying a 300bhp car :D

It's not great at the moment, definitely noticing it's thirstier but it's far too early to judge :pac: I'm averaging mid-20's whereas the GTI would have been 33-34 average. But I'm obviously still in novelty mode and putting the foot down a bit more than I would have. I expect it'll settle down into high 20's / 30-ish average after a while.

Thats not bad to be fair, considering the big jump in power and 4wd. Although it spends most of its time as a FWD I'm guessing? The GTi was very good in fairness!

Yes, it's not permanent 4WD. Power goes to the rear when necessary (loss of grip or pushing on). I gave it some welly at the toll booth on the M6 last week... the sensation as the rear end shoves you forward was absolutely class :D

I can imagine! :D I have an mk7 R on my list for a future car, hurry up and sell it haha! :pac: Been a long time Subaru fan but the current gen R seems like a better package all around!

The new Subaru STi is getting a lot of plaudits alright and I think it was 5th Gear who had it ahead of the R on their test track. But personally I couldn't live with the Subaru's looks or that '90's era interior.

It settles at around 28 - 30mpg once the engine is run in.

I've heard good things about the wrx actually. Apparently it's rated better for real world driving then the more track focused sti, it got a new engine with great low end torque whereas the sti kept the old engine from tenge my08 one. The difference between the interior is night and day compared to the golf though! And I guess the sti looks a bit wild at my age haha!
