Crazing in external plastered walls

    Hey all,

New build house and all my external walls outside had a sand and cement plastered finish last September/November and there is crazing happening pretty much all over them.

During a dry day you wouldn't notice anything, there are a few hairline cracks visible in a few places but this was due to drilling out waste pipes in a few places, fixing downpipes etc.

However when it rains and the walls are drying out after the rain stops there is crazing lines all over the walls. There is no boasting of the plaster anywhere so it's not coming away from the walls.

I am in an open field basically, no shelter and open to the wind. Plasterer did the plastering perfectly, and is an excellent plasterer. I asked the plasterer and he said this can happen but that it will be ok. He also noted that another reason for this can be caused by settlement of the blocks etc. Obviously blocks go up and then plastering takes place soon after and cracks can occur due to any slight settlement in the blocks, which I can understand. Cracks are probably inevitable. I have a feeling myself that the crazing is mainly due to the wind drying out the plaster too quick after the walls were plastered.

I'm just wondering will this be ok?? It's unsightly at the moment when walls are drying out after rain but I will be painting next summer. Will painting help the crazing or hide it? Has this happened anyone else?

    Thanks all.

I'm fairly sure the painitng will substantially hide it because once the wall is painted it is quite similar in colour regardless of whether it is wet or dry.

I'm not sure whether hiding the problem is enough though. All plasterwork has some degree of cracking - usually evident when unpainted and drying out after rain showers but I'm not sure if the extent of it that you describe is a sign of a greater problem. It might be worth getting a second opinion from someone othet than the plasterer who did it.
