We went to Bath for two nights in January last year and had a ball. It's easy to get around, plenty of culture, nice feel about the city and its somewhere different. Stayed at a place called One Three Nine here and it was really nice!

What kind of trip are you looking for? Also how long are you going? I assume city break means just a weekend but just asking for clarification just in case.

Are you into night life, cheap drink and clubbing? Or would you be more of a museums and admire the old architecture type of person? Or both?

Are you on a tight budget?

These kind of details should help people answer, otherwise you will just get a bunch of responses from people recommending their favourite place which may not be super relevant if your tastes are very different.

Thanks for replies, wouldn't really be looking for crazy night life, clubbing etc. planning on leaving on a Friday and coming home on a Monday. Starting budget would be €500 for both but that could be increased or decreased. All input appreciated.

Why dont you do somthing different fly to Germany and help at a centre for the newly arrived immigrants. Sure you wont have the usual forgettable weekend like everyone else but would have done somthing worth while.

If you haven't done it before why not try Paris, the city centre is beautiful. You have to be careful where you eat and stay as some places are over priced, but it is a beautiful city and nice at this time.

ryanair just launched Amsterdam flights from end of October from €10 each way introductory price.

At this time of year somewhere like Barcelona can be nice as its still in the 20s. Just have to watch out for thieving b-tards ruining your trip.

I think Amsterdam is a must at that price, anyone any advice on accomodation or best area to stay.
    again all appreciated.

I stayed at the Nh Caransa in Rembrandt Square about 18 months ago, nice area, tram outside the door literally and it was a really good hotel great value rate.

I would go to Bergamo, with a lovely medieval town, you could get the train and visit the expo in Milan http://www.expo2015.org/en

Also I would second previous recommendations such as Bath and Barcelona.

Bergamo is great, but if you are in that part of Italy you should try to get to the great lakes (Garda or Como), Verona and if you can stretch to it, Venice ! Bit much for a weekend though.

I'm thinking in a similar vain; the cheap Ryanair flights to Amsterdam seem too good to miss to be honest. We'd be going mid-week.

Alternatively, we'd both love to go to Iceland, that's been on my to-do list for a long time but it does seem rather expensive compared to the standard city break.
