People of AH, do you own a thermometer?

So as the title says, do you own a thermometer?

When I was a child my mother never checked my temperature and I just got a thermometer myself when I was an adult, and I'd check my temperature when I got ill. It was in fact my OH (who is German who suggested buying one) and who told me that paracetamol brings down a fever, I had no idea. I have a condition that leads me to have frequent chest infections and so when I was younger I was often confused about why I felt hot/cold and why I'd feel better in the evenings (my parents were baffled too, now of course I know that the fever had broken). Even when I go to the hospital when I have an infection, my nurses are surprised that I have my own thermometer and can check my temperature myself. I think this might be a uniquely Irish thing, but maybe I'm wrong.

Today I'm very grateful for my OH as I have a 38.4 fever and she just gave me some paracetamol, if I'd never met her I'd probably still be shaking on the couch under a duvet and hot water bottle. Maybe I'm just a bit slow on the uptake though :P

So people of AH, I will attach a poll.

    38.4 is a fever?

    38.4 isn't a fever.

Over 38 degrees is considered a temperature spike.

    Sounds a bit OCD.

I do, since I had a baby. One of the fancy ear thermometer ones. Didn't have one when I was living alone though.

I have a sugar thermometer, does that count?

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

Why don't we pronounce thermometer as Therm-O-Meter instead of Ther-Mom-Eter?

    Eh.

    Good question.

    Like Speed-Om-Eter instead of Speed-O-Meter.

Slightly. I have two. One under tongue and one under arm.
I have to Invest in an ear one.
    No rectal thermometers for me.

    http://www.m.webmd.com/children/tc/fever-temperatures-accuracy-and-comparison-topic-overview

According to this rectal temp should be 37.5-38 normally.

Think I'll just stick with a forehead thermometer myself :pac:

Yeah I have a thermometer alright, a little strip that you just place on the forehead, not sure about it's accuracy, but I can live with the trade off! :pac:

    Not fully accurate!! :P

I have a thermometer for my cat too (ok, so maybe I am a bit OCD about this) and I check his temperature when he doesn't seem well (rectally, of course:P). I felt so bad when I took him to the vet one time and the vet put some lubricant on the probe first, as I'd never done that for him, the poor cat :pac: Once again, I might be oversharing.

    Several

    - Freezer
    - Oven
    - 3 or 4 for home brewing

A nurse walks around all day with an anal thermometer in her top pocket. what does she say?

I don't, but we had one when I was a kid. It measured in Fahrenheit and there was always great excitement when it recorded 105+ because it meant a day off school was probable.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 158 ✭✭TheNobleKipper

As a kipper I shouldn't need one, but I even have 2 thermometers.

My mum has some, always pulled it out when someone had a fever. Surely that's the norm?

Were yer parents just clueless? We always had some paracetamol when we had a bad fever.
