    Hiya,

Looking for people's opinions on a second hand estate for around €15k. The main driving would be motorway driving at weekends (around 12 - 15km per year).

I've taken a look at the Kia Ceed, Hyundai i30 and Octavio and wonder how they'd compare to bigger estates such as the Avensis or Superb.

Would I be better off going for a bigger car or with my mileage would some of the smaller estates suit? I would basically be only using it for my wife, baby and two dogs so won't be carrying huge weight.

    Kind Regards,

    Willie

id test drive each one and see which you feel most comfortable in, some of the cars have 1.6 diesel engines which can be a bit sluggish. Personally i like the Toyota, 2.0 diesel engine, you can get high spec ones at good prices, reliable, nice interior. Also Skoda Octavia is a car i like. They are very good cars. Never driven the Kia or Hyundai so i cant comment but Kia has 7 year warranty and if you get a car within that warranty you will be doing well

    Interesting question.

Do you need extra space or not ? (or think you might, in a couple of years down the road) if yes.... buy the bigger car. The advantages of a bigger estate are that you can fit more into it and it will probably be better to drive and maybe higher specc'ed etc. But it will cost more to buy and more to run (Road tax, insurance, fuel, maintenance).

If you don't need the space.. go for the smaller estate car. Cheaper to buy, cheaper to run

Estates are not that 'hot' on the forecourts at the moment... SUV's and MPV's have stolen their thunder so you will be getting a lot of metal for your buck.

Personally I drove a Volvo V70 D5 for a few years... great car (could carry an Elephant in the back), but certainly not a cheap car to run :-( I replaced it 2 years ago with a small SUV and have absolutely no regrets.

Yeah will take a look at a few of them. Think won't need the larger space for another couple of years at least but need to decide whether I'm going to upgrade in a couple of years by buying a smaller estate now or buy a bigger estate now and keep it for 5 / 6 years.

One of my neighbours has the Volvo V50 estate and its a lovely looking car. There's a lot of options around.
