You know what I'm going to start off by saying **** religion.

So apparently the Pope has called for a year of forgiveness, in which Women who have had abortions can pop down to thier local church and ask a Priest to forgive them.

    http://m.rte.ie/news/2015/0901/724900-pope-abortion/

Where the hell do these people get off with this sort of crap? Should it not be the other way around were these people should be going door to door and asking people to forgive them?

From what I remember about Catholicism I thought that popping down to the local priest to get forgiveness was an all year, every year kind of thing.

Thought the pope would have known that.

I don't see the problem tbh. Abortion is an excommicatable (that should be a word) sin only forgivable by a Bishop IIRC. This just streamlines it down the ranks. If you don't believe then what difference does it make?

Might actually provide comfort to those women who have had an abortion and are also practising catholics (yes I know abortion is against their religion but so is contraception and pre-marital sex).
Not the worst thing by the church.

Will they be handing out miniature American flags as part of this initiative?

Excommicatable should still be a word though. I've seen worse spelling on here, in some of the more high and mighty forums. Anyway, who cares what the church have to say on it really?

I'm inclined to agree with this. While the Church's record on human rights is anything but laudable, I can imagine that a lot of religious women might feel guilty about having an abortion.

Pretty good initiative from the Pope I think.

I had originally put "->" but then googled "right arrow character" to give my post an all-round more professional and authoritative appearance so that nobody would question or correct me.

But the reason they feel guilty is because of the Church?? Sounds a bit like victim blaming to me, come down here and confess to the awful experience you went through, that we have made into a "sin" and we will forgive you.

I keep imagining the priest saying in a Dot Cotton voice "they ought to be ashamed". Honestly though I like this pope. He seems like a nice dude trying his best.

Whatever about feeling guilty because of having had an abortion, to feel guilt over it due to what a certain religion says, is most unfortunate and sad. Nothing worse than needless suffering, and religion specialises in it.

I'd like to see the church publicly atone for their sins.

It's a pretty huge step in fairness. Goes to show just how forward thinking this pope appears to be.

Is that where you have dabbled with communism and catholicism and then copped on?

If he was 'forward thinking', he would not be a member of the catholic church.

Yes, but his forward thinking is making some huge changes in the church, so is it not better that he is a member?

Is bumming altar boys an excommunicable sin?

Can the Pope or the church fix anything else?

I've a cold sore and a sore arm. Might pop down later...save me 60 notes from the doctor.

Yeah, I'm sure the priest will give you a cream for that!

That's most sins for you; coveting stuff, having a ****, not being a Catholic...

Nah, you get an all-expenses paid life in the Vatican for that.

    Guys,
A year or more ago we started directing people to post threads about religion in the relevant religious forums. For a while, there were very few threads about religion in After Hours and it was a better forum for it.

The forum is suffering once again and reverting back to a nasty negative forum which none of us want (and if that's how you do want it then we're sorry but tough titty :P) so we will be making a concerted effort to improve After Hours over the next while.

Please post threads about religion, within the relevant religious forum, please ensure that you have read their charter before doing so and that your thread or post does not breach their rules.

    Thank you.
