Hi guys...
I was wondering about the status of my exchange - OME1_E01
I am a direct-connect, and unfortuntely >2km away, but am tentatively hopeful that the exchange upgrade might show some improvement in my frankly pathetic 2.6Mb/s
Thanks
Gerry

Hi gerryk

The exchange upgrade will not affect non-eFibre connections I'm sad to say. The maximum range remains within 2Km from the cabinet.

I checked your line for faults and there's no sign of any issues. Your speeds are set at up to 3Mb due to the distance of the exchange to your line and I'm genuinely sorry to advise that eircom will be unable to offer you an improved speed for the foreseeable future.

Thanks
Al

Hi Alan...
thanks for the reply.
My connection was a relatively stable 3.2MB/s before I left Eircom earlier this year, buut since I returned around June, it has dropped, and remained at around 2.6MB/s
While I was with 'another carrier', they asked their wholesaler (oresumably Eircom) to make some improvements. I would have thought these improvements would have improved the connection, not dis-improved it, but it seems the opposite is true.

You can see for yourself in the attached files... the first attachment shows average download speeds... prior to June, Eircom peaked at around 3.2 MB/s, but whaatever happpened since June, the max I can get is 2.6. The second is more revealing... basically it shows average page-load times, so exercises a number of metrics: download, DNS query, hop latency etc, so is a good general measure of network health. It shows a pretty flat load time of about 1sec until June, when it jumps by a factor of 300% and stays up there.

So it's one thing to say you can't give me any better, but can you even give me back what I had? Or make some guarantees that things won't get even worse??

BTW, here are the connection specs from back when I originally moved from Eircom - sometime in January:

20th January
DSL Mode : ITU G.992.1(G.DMT)
Speed: 4096 kbps/384 kbps
Line Attenuation(Down/Up): 50.0 dB/ 31.0 dB
DSL Noise Margin: 8.0 dB/ 22.0 dB
WAN IP Address: 86.45.250.49
IP Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway: 159.134.155.12

24th January
broadband: Connected
DSL Mode : ITU G.992.1(G.DMT)
Speed: 4096 kbps/384 kbps
Line Attenuation(Down/Up): 50.0 dB/ 31.0 dB
DSL Noise Margin: 7.0 dB/ 22.0 dB
WAN IP Address: 86.40.113.189
IP Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255

Hi gerryk

I'm sorry I can't offer you better news but eircom will be unable to offer you improved speeds to what you currently have.

Your speeds are set to up to 3Mb and there is no room for any increase of this due to your lines distance from it's exchange.

As you have added above "Line Attenuation(Down/Up): 50.0 dB/ 31.0 dB" - Attenuation is a measure of how much the signal has degraded between the DSLAM and the modem. This is largely attributed to the distance from the exchange. The lower the dB, the better for this measurement.

The only time speeds may be increased is when Attenuation is approx below 30dB. Speeds are advised, sold and provided in terms of "up to" and for this reason I can't guarantee anything beyond the existing terms and conditions although I do wish I could.

Thanks
Al

Hi Alan..
I realise all this.. maybe my question wasn't clear, so I'll restate...

Why did the line-quality suddenly deteriorate around June?
What can be done to restore it to the previous performance?

The sync speed on my connection is not set to 3Mb/s, but previously it was 4, and my overall download rate was reasonably stable at 20% better than it is right now.

I'm sorry gerryk

I cannot offer you the specific infrastructural reasons to explain why the speeds deteriorate by 1Mb - ultimately speeds are provided in terms of "up to" as situations like this can arise.

As I previously mentions we will be unable to restore to previous speeds.

Should you wish to contest this further you are welcome to lodge an official complaint. Once a complaint is lodged it is investigated in full and the advised response timeframe is up to 10 working days.

You can log a complaint online here: https://www.eircom.net/logacomplaint.jsp or by letter ensuring to add the following information

- First name and surname
- The eircom account number
