Have you checked how much insurance will cost you?

In that price range you are looking at a car that will be at least ten years old, and something like a micra/corsa.

Go check quotes for insurance on a 12-15 year old 1 litre micra before you buy.

Here's a link to a pile of 1.0 cars on donedeal for 250-1000 euros.

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/find/cars/for-sale/Ireland/?ranges[engine_from]=1&ranges[price_from]=250&ranges[price_to]=1000&source=ALL

But seriously go check how much insurance will cost you first.

At 18 with no NCB, an own name policy can easily exceed €1000. My first policy cost me 1400.

The funny thing is that you would have to get something relatively modern to have a decent insurance premium. Chances are you'd already have spent your budget on the car and have nothing left for insurance.

Have set aside money for insurance(1500)...
I can get insured under my mother/father for around 1400/1500...

Not on your own car you can't, it's called fronting and the insurance companies are well wise to it.

Seriously, do what I said and go get some quotes, 1500 won't come near it.

Are you on a provisional? If you are search this forum for provisional licence and insurance if you don't want to get quotes.

I started out in a '00 Micra and it was a great little runner. That generation of Micra was prone to rusting (or so I was told) but I was very happy with my one while I had it.

€1000 would get you a nice example on Donedeal. Best of luck buying.

I would be thinking of a yaris or a micra but make sure you go look at a few and get a rust free and clean one as you can, these cars if even looked after half right just keep going and going

Could get yourself a '01/'02 1L corsa. It would be cheap to maintain as parts are truly plentiful.

    Not fun but definitely cheap.

One more thing to add, insurers are starting to refuse insurance on older cars. Also check that first if you haven't

If he isn't using the car for college or going to work he will be fine. Only then it will be looked into. And again hard to prove.

If i were you I'd get something like a Micra. They're reliable and cheap to run. But your insurance will be more than what the car is worth. I started off on a 1litre Suzuki Swift and my insurance was €1,800. Only paid €400 for the car. But stick Japanese. You don't want to spend money on your first car repairing it. Check out DoneDeal. Loads of cars on there
