Half Marathon Training Plan

I ran a marathon in 2:59 and my half pb is 1:27.

I am 45 and I want to concentrate on improving my half pb (down to 1:24 ?) and will target Waterford AC in December (about 14 weeks away).

I have followed P&D up to 55 for my marathon pb but found the intervals very very tough (in fact I don't think I hit the targets...) so speed is a challenge for me.

What's a good training plan for a half? Where can I find one?

    Many thanks.

Even I am preparing for Running Expo NY and I am practising for it day and night.I would suggest you that you pay special attention towards your diet because I am doing so and it really helps.

To be honest, training for a half shouldn't be too different than training for a 10k.
You keep your speedwork going twice a week ie your intervals, maybe up your tempo's to a hour and on your long runs add in some hm pace miles.

Not at all! Only joking anyway of course with the original. I know a couple of runners with 1.25 or higher Half times and sub 3 in the bag.

I'm 1.22.0x for the Half and still can't get a 2 in the Full clock. At least not in the 'Hour' box anyway.

If Pfitzinger has worked for you before you might be interested in his 'Faster Road Racing: 5k to Half-Marathon'. I followed one of the 5k plans from it earlier this year and found it worked really well for me and led to a couple of PBs over 5k and 5 miles. I'm currently in the first week of one of the half-marathon plans from the same book (I'm targeting Portarlington, 2 weeks before Waterford) so we'll see how that goes.

Certainly looks like there is a few minute to come off your half vs full marathon.

Have you ever looked at the Garmin plans? They're available online. There's an Intermediate and an Advanced. Maybe if you took a couple of the first and a couple of the second......

If you're ready for major commitment you could try the full Advanced but it looked too much for me.

Out of curiosity OP what are your typical times over shorter distances, 5K, 5 miles? My HM pb is 1:27 too but I'm a long way from sub 3.

Well my PB at 5k is 17:59 and 10k is 38:10 but that was a year before my sub 3. In fact I did the 10k in Stoneyford in 39:26 2 weeks before sub 3 in Cork and I had to give it all for that (but in fairness Stoneyford is hardly flat).

I am just not good at speed and I'd like to change that. I think what helped my sub 3 were all the mi-long runs divided in thirds at 8:00, 7:40 and the final third at 7:20. I just followed P&D up to 55 miles.
