Dependent partner separating...what are my options?

My partner and I have called it a day after a number of years together. He is on JSA and he has been receiving an allowance for me as his dependent, which he has always given to me. I am still living in the house and don't know what to do next in terms of getting my affairs in order and moving on. As I am not working, I will be dependent on rent supplement to get a place.

Can I make my own JSA claim while still under the same roof as him? Will they still consider us to be a couple while I try to get alternative accommodation sorted? I have three dogs so it's not going to be easy :( We can tolerate each other for now, but in the long term I need to move on.

Secondly, will I even qualify for rent supplement? He got rent supplement for the both of us, so do I need to wait a certain period, or rent in my own right before I can get it myself?

I'm really stressing about all of this, so would like to know where I stand on moving forward.

Call into your local office and ask to have your claims split, this will get you started.Tell them what is happening and ask them what the best way forward is for your claim/rent allowance.
