Any legal recourse for unfinished renovations?

    What recourse is available in law for someone who has paid most of the cost of a renovation job that the contractor has gone AWOL from, leaving a substantial amount of work outstanding? Contractor is non-responsive to emails, and phone calls go straight to answer machine. He was last at the house 2 1/2 weeks ago & there has been zero communication from him for a week.

    Small claims court limit is €2000. Amount of work paid for and outstanding exceeds €2000.

    Under the Sale of Goods & Services Act is it worth using a solicitor to chase the contractor?

    Any advice? Would be very grateful for any help. Thanks.

    Was there a written contract?

    If so were there provisions for professional certification etc.?

    Failing above you will have to employ an architect/engineer/quantity surveyor to measure the work done, certify if it is OK etc.

    An such an experienced professional will have to be paid.

    imho at least €750 for examination and report, plus min €500 to attend hearing.

    If successful you may get an order for payment of that by the defendant.

    More likely you will find that the defendant is broke,

    You may be as well to forget it.

    If getting another builder in to finish, take some legal advice on procedure
