3DS-XL Refurbished

What does it mean when a 3DS XL has been refurbished. Looking at getting one for the son, he wants one for his birthday, but his original DS (very old model) is falling to bits. He's turning 11 so I'm not sure if he will get that long out of it, maybe 2 years. He uses it on long car journeys and some mornings when he is relaxing in bed.
You're chatting over €200 for a new DS, but I have seen a refurbished one for sale on Ebay for €100. What does a refurbished one mean and would it look obvious that it has been used before?

As it sounds, its been used, Id read the description to see what exactly the story is, it could be quite new and just be an unwanted return or it could be a 4 year old release model that is quite worn.

You can get a ice white 3ds in argos for eur120 if you are looking for a new one at a discount.
