Hi there, I'm heading up north this saturday to buy a car, all of which are private, I'm not really worried about buying from a private seller as my dad is a mechanic and has been dealing in cars for the last 30 years. So my problem is all this paper work, I want to know what forms I should get when buying the car. Can someone put it all in plain english. I have tried the VRT and revenue website but i cant find what I'm looking for. Do I just take V5C off the guy when i buy it off him. What does he send off if anything. When i bring it back down, what do i need to bring to the vrt office.

You should get the full V5 form with the seller taking the export section and them sending that to the DVLA in Swansea. You need to make an appointment to VRT the car when you bring it back herem

Get either an invoice or a receipt for the sale with the date of purchase on it.

You will need this for the VRT to prove that car was presented to them within 30 days. Extra fees/charges will apply if it is over the 30 days.

You get the full V5, including the export part, the seller notifies the DVLA by letter.

+1, the full v5 is a must. No v5=no sale. Also you need to get a receipt of some rough description.

The receipt just needs the date/reg/price and a scrawl of someone's signature on a small piece of paper. (trust me on this as that's what I gave Mr VRT only this morning)

Does the v5c doc cover the below requirement for NCTS?

Evidence of previous registration e.g. foreign certificate of registration, a certificate of permanent exportation or a certificate of de-registration, as appropriate.

As your father is a mechanic I'm sure he can advise you in relation to the paperwork.

You will take the V5 sections 1-8* minus the small section 11 (light blue border) on back that is for current owner to send to DVLA to notify them car is being exported. Sections 1-8 are needed by VRT to varify the car for registration.

Once home you make an appointment with VRT guys at your local NCT centre and they will relieve you of documents and money, at which point you can make an appointment for an nct. To tax car you'd have to wait at a guess till system is updated/get your new reg docs.

*section 9 and 10 are related to uk sales so can be binned, but may as well leave VRT people to bin.
