Why is it you need to top off the oil? Has any of it leaked? Generally-speaking the oil in a gearbox is designed to last for the lifetime of the transmission. [Manual]

Transmission fluid and gearbox oil could be interpreted to be the same thing however, transmission fluid is usually used in the context of automatic transmissions.

If it is a manual transmission we are discussing, then you will find a fill plug on the side of the box where you will add fluid until it starts leaking out. When it stops leaking, you close the plug.

We need a bit more info.

There's a video on youtube "Vw passat B6 2005- gear oil change adding Lucos oil stabiliser ". Is that the one? Just a heads-up, the car in that video is actually a 1.9TDI, different box.

Assuming there has been no leakage, and you wish to add a quantity of fluid, you will have to drain some of the fluid. You cannot just add your additive as this will just overfill the box.

If you're really set on doing this, and I must add, adding an additive to stop gearing noises is a temporary solution at best. Then the way I would go about it is to first drain all of the oil. Purchase some new oil. Add total capacity of the gearbox minus additive quantity. Put in the additive, close the plug and hope for the best.

I can get you diagrams from Autodata that show plug locations.

cheers id appreciate the diagrams! im wondering if a complete change of trnasmission fluid on its own would solve the issue, i get a whine/slight grind when shifting from 6th back down into 5th gear? and how expensive is it to get a mechanic to change the fluid?

    PM'd you since I can't yet post.

The gearbox oil is designed to last the lifetime of the gearbox. The only reason they add fill&drain plugs is to account for leaks and rebuilds. So unfortunately, I doubt just changing the oil would do you any good.

Not sure about costs, it is somewhat annoying since you fill it from the side and you also need a special tool to open the fill plug. Call around.

Sounds like it is not yet a major issue.
