Buying a Second Modem/Router Combo

My predicament, as it stands at the moment:

We have UPC 240MB internet in the house, but unfortunately our Technicolour modem/router is located in the living room downstairs (along with where the UPC access point is), whereas my PC is in the room directly above it. I achieve internet by connecting the router to a powerline adapter, but unfortunately the speed is limited by the adapter itself.

To overcome this, I was thinking of whether or not it would be viable to get another modem/router combo and to put it in my room where the PC's located to take full advantage of the speeds we're currently paying for. I know I need an access point for the modem to connect to, and there's one located in my room, but I don't know whether or not it'd work, since it's old and wasn't installed by UPC. If it doesn't work, can it be made work by UPC?

    Cheers!

Why not just move the modem to the second coax point. If it's connected to the incoming UPC cable it should work OK.
