Could happen in the US - they tried that with Faulty Towers, The Office and prob others. The two I mentioned were complete disasters.

What about a prequel or a spin off or cross over?

The US Office was hardly a disaster. It completely overshadowed the UK office even.
However a US Father Ted would be woeful.

A prequel with Father Dougal in the seminary would be interesting but ardal o Hanlon says he's done with the character

Nah....Young Father Jack is the way to go. But that would be more of a porn movie / slasher flick than anything else

There's a good quote on Wikipedia about why it wouldn't work in America
In November 2007, a separate American remake was announced. Rather than Craggy Island, this version would be set in an unfortunate fishing village in New England. American actor John Michael Higgins was cast as Ted, but expressed concerns about the show's religious themes: "The English have a very robust history of being unkind about religion. We don't have that in our country, we're frightened of it. It's basically that you guys are doing an Irish joke also, we don't have that. So I'll be Father Ted, we'll see how it goes." Filming was scheduled to begin in January 2008.[46]

In January 2015, Linehan said that there had been "a few attempts" by US broadcasters to remake the show, including one which would have been set in Boston – an idea Linehan considered "ridiculous".[47]

Also the disastrous IT Crowd remake, Fr Ted should just be left as is.

The only US remake I saw that I thought was better than the original was Shameless. I think the US version of that is fantastic - but only because it is so unlike anything the Americans normally do. Father Ted would be a complete fail. Also why I predict this Top Gear with Chris Evans will be a flop.

How about, instead of a straight remake of Father Ted someone made a version with a different religion, Islam or Judaism for instance? Rabbi Theodor could have potential I think.

They actually tried to do an American version of it, I believe.

The problem with the US versions of the IT Crowd and the Inbetweeners was that they tried to do essentially a shot for shot remake, without willing to go the length's that either of these did. The first season of the US Office was essentially a carbon copy of the UK one, but with much better looking cast, but it came into its own in the second and third season onwards.

I believe Lineham mentioned in an interview that Noel Fielding's character in the IT Crowd was written specifically for him and the fact that the US version wanted the same again meant that they just didn't get it.

The US version had Richard Ayoade as Moss also. Why bother when you are going to have 2 of the same actors in the remake playing the characters from the original with no personality changes. Like, seriously, whats the point? Oh yeah, $$$

The biggest issue I had with the casting that they had Joel McHale as Chris O'Dowd's replacement. Love McHale and he's amazing on the Soup and Community, but he's far too good looking to portray the character he was.

Same with the Inbetweeners.. The cast were too good looking.

Oh Lord. You couldn't possibly do a remake of Fr. Ted, that character lived and died with Dermot.

Yep, I don't think a straight re-make would work but a spinoff might. i.e. Craggy Island Two or Dougal the early years?;)

John and Mary move to the mainland and open a small B&B in Galway.
