How much will an engine replacement on a 2008 Fiesta cost?

Hoping this is the place for this. My car overheated and died today while I was travelling in a different part of the country. My insurance covered towing to a nearby garage and while I haven't got confirmation from the mechanic, his initial assessment (as well as that of the kind mechanic who stopped to help) was that it will probably need a new engine. I was wondering if anyone would have any idea how much it will cost? I don't know anything about the garage it's been towed to and I'm afraid of being totally ripped off. Any ideas how much it will cost to replace the engine or if I wanted to get it towed to my own mechanic (125km) how much would that cost.
    Thanks in advance!

Can You give more details. Was the failure accompanied by a bang, steam, will the engine turn over did any oil or other fluid escape.

It could be the cylinder head or timing belt break and it might be repairable.

Thanks for reply, no bang or steam. Just a rattling that I thought was coming from the boot. It went on for about 30 mins but wasn't that loud. Started to lose power so pulled in and couldn't restart it when I stopped. There was a strong smell of burning when we opened the bonnet and the temperature gauge had gone way up. It had about 45 mins to cool before breakdown assist came and put water in but wouldnt restart so was towed then.

when did you last check the oil? Sounds like it may indeed new a new engine which will be in excess of 1.5 k depending on the engine and if a reconditioned or second hand is fitted

The oil level was fine, the first mechanic who stopped to help checked it and it was definitely OK. 1500e :( had a feeling it would be something like that

If it's a diesel you are looking at around 2,500 for a second hand engine supply and fit

Thanks for the replies, have arranged to get it towed to my local mechanic and he's going to sort it. Fingers crossed it won't be as bad as first thought

If you have a MK6 1.25 fiesta you can always buy a MK5 fiesta for €300 on adverts that has a good engine and swap that in . The gearbox on the MK6 then has to go onto the new engine(Straight swap) . Then swap over the inlet manifold and a few more bits and its like new .

Thanks for the replies, managed to get it back to my local mechanic so I'm really happy with that. Was afraid I would get ripped off as I'd no idea what it might cost and so I started this thread. Now that it's with him I know it'll be grand as I and all my family have been using him for years and I know he'll do a good job and definitely won't rip me off. Thanks again for all the replies.
