Laying attic insulation over attic boards

Hi folks. I am doing an attic clear out and later plan to insulate the attic. In areas of the attic there is a layer insulation between ceiling joists and then it is covered in various wooden boards. I was wondering will it make a difference if I just lay my insulation over existing boards? Considering there is a layer of insulation under the boards already? ( I just don't have the time to remove all these boards)

I will not be walking in this area but want to put in the 300mm of insulation to help as the house is getting on 20 years.

    Thanks

Are there gaps between the insulation and the boards?
If there is (which I suspect), then the boards need to be lifted.

I did this for a living before. Yep mick is right. It depends on where boards edges are

There is the original insulation which was probably squashed down when the boards were laid over it. This is in between the ceiling joists and under the boards if that makes sense

What we want tk know is there a gap between top insulation floor boards, (10mm is enough to leak heat). (Is it 100mm joists filled with 100mm insulation, then floor board). A pic would great to see extents, but not sure if u can post a lic on this website
