Bank account/NI question

Im going to be moving over to the UK in the next few months for work, and was searching on here for information on setting up a bank account and getting an NI number.
I saw a post about someone going to Newry to get a NI number but since it was from 2010 I wasn't sure if this was still possible. Is it?
Also regarding the bank account, I've seen Lloyds mentioned as the easiest, is that still the case?
I will be staying in short term accommodation for my first 6 months, will a letter from the leasing manager confirming this be enough?
Ideally I'd like to have this sorted before I go over, is this possible or should I just wait?
    Thanks

I'd wait. You don't need an NI to start working. No idea about Lloyds. I opened with RBS with no questions asked.

Thanks for your reply! What proof of address did you use for RBS?

I registered to vote. When I had the interview in the bank they looked up my name and postcode and found me in the system.
