Knee in pain after running

Couch to 10k jogger here. My problem is that my knee (right) flares up at about 5k. The pain is in the outside/back of my knee.
It hurts to walk down stairs but not up in the days after I run.

I can play indoor soccer for an hour or mountain bike for hours with no discomfort but when I run its painful.

I spoke to a friend who is a keen runner who said it sounds like an it band.

I'd like to get this looked into my question is should I go to a physio or GP?

    Thank you

Skip the GP and go to the physio.

+1 on the physio and bring your footwear with you.

Definitely sounds like IT band. You can spend the next 6 weeks reading articles online and struggling with this and then giving in and going to a physio. Or you can just go to the physio now.

    Your choice :)

Had similar type of thing. Was always sore walking up stairs or generally some niggle somewhere after running.

For me picked a Physio recommended for running stuff (3 visits total, about half the time was spent on the sore knee/s), did the strength and conditioning exercises he recommended religiously (daily for months) and generally changed the way I trained, (slowed down a lot) and have had no problems since.

Just don't expect to go to a Physio, get fixed in a session or two and have no issues after. It usually takes more than that.

    Go to a Physio

If the Physio doesn't help, go to a doctor.

Aye, physio is your only man. Wait until they give you the diagnosis. May not necessarily be the IT band

Thank you for all the inputs.

Can you recommend a good physio in the south dublin /north Wicklow area?

(Unless that question is against charter rules in which case delete this post. )

    Cheers
