Train security checks

What do you think about the EU considering airport style security before boarding trains. I think it is a ridiculous idea if they want to introduce this what would be the advantage of rail travel over air travel. Could this ever be introduced into Ireland. Lastly could the security in Hueston Station or on the luas do anything like searches if they suspected a terrorism threat. Personally I think there should be a permanent armed garda presence around Hueston and Conolly but I know Irish rail would never pay for this.

Well considering Irish Rail's diabolical station signing policy I think the terrorists would never be able to find any Irish Rail stations in the first place.

Airport-style security just wouldn't happen - too expensive to apply to every station on the network. Probably there'd be a few extra security staff at main stations who will do spot checks.

I can imagine the x ray scanners and a crack team of soldiers and guards all over Cloughjordan station. Yep. Definitely. It won't bankrupt Irish Rail at all at all. :pac:

There were times during the Troubles when all Belfast bound passengers were scanned by Army and Gardaí.

Indeed. The Enterprise will be the only train really affected by any change, and its boarding policies at both ends would easily cope with any change with a minimum of hassle.

why should irish rail pay for such an armed garda presence considering the garda are payed for by the peoples taxes. the checks the EU are considering don't effect domestic services.

I'm very highly educated. I know words, i have the best words, nobody has better words then me.

They should have done likewise with the Wee Swilly; fair's fair :)

Not as outrageous as you may think, Shanghai metro does it for everyone for example.

Hardly cost effective to have staff and equipment at most of the rural stations though

We do need a transport police service like they have in the UK especially on some of the busier services/GAA specials.

Why not have a Garda based all times at the following stations.

    Heuston
    Portlaoise
    Thurles
    Mallow
    Cork
    Limerick
    Waterford
    Kilkenny
    Kildare
    Athlone
    Galway
    Dundalk
    Sligo
    Mullingar
    Carlow
Commuter stations in Dublin and Cork

Plenty of free space in most stations for an office. Crimes could be reported by staff/passengers onboard the train. Instead of waiting for Gardai to arrive (there was times it took 30 minutes to 1 hour) there'll be a Garda waiting at the platform to remove/arrest troublemakers. It will cost us the taxpayers and Irish Rail nothing.

There are already no Gardaí in Rush, or Lusk, both stations having been shut down in the last few years. There are very few cops in Skerries out of office hours.
There's no garda station in Donabate.

It's a rediculous idea to have cops in train stations when there's no cops in communities with crime already.
What crimes are happening on trains that would warrant this re-direction of already scarce resources?

Could we have a garda in Wellingtonbridge too - just to make sure nobody robs the corrugated station building. :D

You'd definitely want one there, I broke into the station a few months ago for the weedspray ;) .

We can't even handle scumbags that travel on the Luas, let alone ISIS.
