Timing chain issue, google it, bmw n47 engine

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 23,208 ✭✭✭✭beertons

That's alarming. With a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty, would that be covered by the garage then for 2 years?

I would be getting it in writing that it was covered

Timing chain aside they are a horrid thing (don't know how anyone sees them as a sexy thing). Cheap feel to them and overpriced.

If she just wants something with a high driving position then have a look at a Renault Capture or Nissan Juke.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,020 ✭✭✭xabi

Ah now, they aren't that bad

The X1 is pointless and has been a poor seller for BMW. If the only reason to buy one other than the premium badge, is for a higher driving position then there are far better and cheaper options out there from main stream manufacturers. 19k gets you alot better these days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,020 ✭✭✭xabi

They are overpriced alright, but way better looking than a juke.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The Capture is the Juke's pretty sister though.

Yes, it's a BMW AUC warranty.

    AUC?

Don't buy an X1. They look gash.

A Golf Plus is higher than a Golf, would that not do her?

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 23,208 ✭✭✭✭beertons

Doesn't want a golf any more.

The X1 is a ridiculous yoke, the only people you'll impress are those with bad taste. You may as well buy a Nissan pulsar if you want to do that.

    They're not even that tall.

She had a look at a pulsar, bit dear. What it makes up for with a big boot, it lacks space with the back seats. Back to the drawing board so.

Does the Pulsar not have pretty much the best rear legroom in the class?

    Used Qashqai perhaps. Mazda CX-3?

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 23,208 ✭✭✭✭beertons

I meant big rear room, small boot. It's early, I'm still asleep.

I'd say that's what we'll look at now. The Tiguan is nice too, but a bit more expensive. Prices are high 'coz it's not out too long.

Your buying from a main dealer so you automatically get the remainder of the manufactures warranty or 2 years. Whatever is longer. It's a BMW Authorised Used Car (AUC).

    What about a Kia Sportage?

    http://www.driving.ie/used-cars/KIA/Sportage/HI-SPEC/201114408525976910/

High driving position, decent size boot and will still have the balance of the original 7 year/150,000 km Kia warranty.

She rang ahead there this morning and asked for the best price on the X1. He dropped it a grand straight away. Reckon he could go any more? Timing chain hasn't been done, but covered for the next 2 years under warranty.

She rang the insurance company for a quote on both that Kia and a quashqi, they want an extra 62.50 a month till next April. Nothing extra for the beamer.

the below while maybe not the best colour and fabric seats is one grand cheaper and has a lot less miles, the one you lined to is near 80k, I am not saying it is much, but once they go over 100k, psychologically people here will want to give you a lot less for it when you go to sell...

That X1 is in stock a while, I reckon you'll get another 500 quid off it on top of the grand.

The warranty will also cover work in any BMW dealer in the country so it's fairly comprehensive.

I'd say he'd let it go for 17.5 alright. Now if only the bank would give her the loan without looking for 6 months off me.

I might be way off, but do you work there?

    Used to....;-)

Ask them about the finance, they'll be able to do something better than your bank.

    Ms

I think the X1 is quiet a nice car. It might be a little over priced compared to other cars but thats because it has the badge. You seem to be getting a good deal I say go for it.

If you people a bad horrible looking BMW look at the first model X3. Horrible thing altogether. They started at 40k and did not even have body coloured bumpers. The interior in them was real cheap too. Horrible looking car.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

If she wants that car then go for it. She's the one that will drive around in it.

If seating position is more important than brand, then maybe a small SUV like Honda HR-V or Volvo XC something

See if she likes something here

What's the issue with rear wheel drive the once in several years it might be effected by snow? The driver and how bad the snow are, are going to be bigger factors than fwd v rwd...

You could get a very good 2008-2010 Ford Fusion with close to half the mileage and for less than half the price of that x1 - raised seating position, fantastic mpg and most of them are 1.4/1.6 diesel. Might be an option and would save serious cash for her to buy something sexy she really likes and wants in a couple of years.

OP, it sounds like a Nissan Qashqai maybe more suitable for your misses.

A fusion though? Op has their pick of nice cars within budget.
My missus would leave me if I got her a fusion :D

She test drove it anyway and didn't like it. Getting the Nissan would cost her an extra 62.50 a month on the insurance. Seems a bit mad. But anyway, I've talked her into getting something cheap that won't break the bank with a car loan. An older car won't depreciate as much as a newer one.

I have a strong affection for the fusion as my brother and I both learnt to drive in my father's one (which he loved btw, very nippy around town and great on the motorway and as said excellent on the mileage) All in all they're a nice car! I don't think they look bad, different, but definitely not ugly..

She was telling her hairdresser on Monday that she was after a car, and low and behold wasn't that woman selling her passat. 06, 1.9, 250,000km, cream leather interior. €3500. Seems solid enough. Timing belt done 2 months ago. Stayed with VW. She's happy anyway.
