Taxation on summer work

    Hi all,

Wondering if someone can help me out. My husband is a student and got a full-time job for the summer. He just received his pay slip today and has been taxed for the first time since starting in May. We didn't think he'd be liable for tax due to the low income, so can someone please enlighten us?

We are taxed as a married couple, and I have his personal tax credit as I'm the main earner, so he just has his PAYE tax credit.
His SRCOP is €6,000 and we estimate that he will have earned €6,250 by the time he finishes next week. He asked someone in payroll and they said it is because of me taking his tax credits and that he will be taxed nearly half his wage next week as he will have gone over the €6,000.

I can't make sense of this at all. Why is his SRCOP only €6,000? I thought he was allowed to earn up to €25,000 before getting taxed 40%.
And even with a SRCOP of €6,000, wouldn't a tax credit of €1,650 cancel out any tax owed on an income of €6,250?

I have payslips and other info here, but not sure what y'all need to know so didn't want to put stuff up if not relevant.

    thanks in advance

If you have all of his transferable rate band, then he should have €24800 of rate band for the year unless it's been reduced by taxable DSP payments.
A call to youe local paye 1890 section is order to get to the bottom of it.
