Having tiled in town for years i can say its one messy job. Getting the old grout out is a nightmare and very easy to scratch or chip the old tiles.

Hand held steam cleaners do a nice job of cleaning old grout .they even sell grout pens which make the grout look new. If there are holes in the grout causing leaks theres a small hand tool for svraping out the joints in tile shops.or even just a hooked blade on a stanley knife. Or a dremel for the brave or impatient.

This year ive found it very difficult to get tradesmen to do anything in the house thats not a handy job. But i wlnt complain as its a sign of things picking up
