A ridiculous move for him, he has been one of a very few on 2FM who know how to do proper radio. Maybe Today FM will snap him up?

Well that's it. They've got rid of the only midweek show I listened to on 2fm.

I've just read on The Journal that Tracy Clifford ex of Spin will be taking over. Good for her, she's very easy on the ears.

I still would've liked Rick to have been moved to his old 10pm slot. I think that might have been his first slot on 2FM?

Move makes sense to be honest. People have been shouting for years that 2FM needed a shake up, and now that it's here, there's more complaining...

I'm a fan of Rick, but he would be out of place on daytimes on 2FM now with what they appear to be trying. With shows like Breakfast Republic, Nicky Byrne, Eoin McDermott, Chris and Ciara and Tracy Clifford (if true), 2FM would probably have the most cohesive and logical line ups they have had in years.

They're not shows I'd be personally interested in (maybe Clifford), but I genuinely wish them the best with it. I hope it means they're going to firmly target the younger demographic like they should be doing IMO.

The story of Rick getting axed has been going around these boards since April http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057416183

Someone at RTE Radio high up the chain needs to get a grip sooner rather than later. They've gone arse about face with 2fm and they need to plug a hole in the waste of money they are pouring down the drain. Ireland 20 years ago outside the pale had no licensed youth stations. Today the country is covered with them. RTE are failing and failing miserably to provide a public music service for the older listener that's readily available to the FM user. The lack of expansion on the availability of DAB has also not helped with the transition.

I definitely think Rick could do better elsewhere. He's intelligent enough not to be just doing a pop music show, and he also seems to have a more interesting taste in music than the 2fm daytime playlist allows.

I dont think this show suits the time on a sat/sun. basically the links are rick and cormac with anecdotes about their lives at home or trips to the shop and talking about everyday things that annoy them....sounds too rehearsed and the music played is the daytime playlist, not even an alternative one for the weekends.

is it meant to be a 'grumpy old men' type show or something?

Rick O Shea has now been cut back to one show a week, while the Operation Transformation show with Louise McSharry is on Saturday mornings @ 9am, the Saturday edition of the Fanning show has moved into O Shea`s slot. I find this very odd as Fanning seems to be covering for someone on Radio 1 every other week now.

Im suprisied that Oshea never gets any cover work on radio 1, i kinda expected him to become a stand in for Darcy

I remember when he was covering for Ruth Scott years ago, it was on about 11ish maybe. He called it Rick Does Rock, was really good all about the music the way i believe radio should be. He brought in boxes of his cds from home, played some great stuff.

He did a poetry programme on RTE Radio 1 a few months ago. I'd doubt it will be repeated, it was fairly dire.

    That was his own show.

He is also on 2XM on Friday's:

The show i'm thinking of wasn't his own show he was covering for Ruth Scott, i think he was on before her but didn't play as much rock or indie stuff. I was a regular listener at the time.

His first slot was 11 to midnight. Ruth Scott was on before this., think 9 to 11

I may have gotten the show times back to front but it was still him covering for Ruth Scott that i remember not his own show, i listened to both regularly.

No Ruth was always on after, midnight till 2 at first and then 11 till 1 when rick moved to the earlier 9 till 11 slot. Fanning was doing 9 till 11 when rick first joined doing the 11 till midnight show,

Yea that's what i remember . Rick's stuff was more mainstream stuff and Ruth was also indie/alternative with some live performances. Rick covered for her while she was on Holiday and play all rock and indie stuff and it was a great show

yes that sounds correct. Ruth was the presenter who took over that slot from the late Uaneen Fitzsimons, albeit with some fill in presenters such as Jay Ahern, Mr Spring, Cian O'Ciabhain before Ruth.

Most Wanted with Dusty would have been 7 to 9 (Rick's first ever show on 2FM 2001, as fill in)

In summer/fall 2003, after Fenton, Dusty and Ruth left 2fm went over the top indie in the evenings with Jenny Huston, Cormac Battle, Dan Hegerty and Fanning doing a chat show at 6pm, this resulted in a major decline in evening listenership to 2fm, jnlrs for 7pm fell from 100k to 20k overnight. They then a couple of years later went back to chart music from 7 till midnight with the frequency with Ruth Scott and Damien Farrelly but listenership only got worse so John McMahon brought back the 6 hours of indie music but listenership got worse again so Dan Healy brought in Chris and Ciara and their listenership is as low as 3k.

3k?! I'd say they could have been reaching 3 times that on iRadio. Mad altogether.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,009 ✭✭✭✭wnolan1992

I wouldn't say the 2003 change-up is solely responsible for the decline.

SPIN 1038 would have just been getting going taking a hit from the Dublin audience, Red FM would have been taking a hit from the Cork audience and Beat would have been starting to take a hit from the South-East, all around the same time. Ray Foley would start on Today FM the following year and boost their night-time listenership as well. Plus, now you have iRadio, Nova and TX all taking their cut in Dublin.

So while the drop from 100k may seem dramatic, it should be noted that that figure was at a time when there was virtually no competition.

It would be interesting to know Today FM's figures at that time for Paul McLoone though, or NT's for Tom Dunne. I mean, we know Game On is 19k and OTB is 47k, but I'm not aware of what figures that late are like on other stations so maybe 3k isn't that bad comparatively...

Not sure where to post this but as this is a thread about 2fm I said I'd post this. It was posted yesterday and it's an official 2fm playlist.

Up until the mid 00s most 2fm djs were completely free to play whatever they wanted

There was always a Current "Playlist" on 2FM. DJ's and Producers would pick some songs from that for their shows.

Since Healy took over, every song is played from a "Running Order" of songs, which seems to me is only and just a rotation of the current "Playlist", with some "oldies" from 2008 onwards.

In other words, 2FM DJ's have no say in what is played on their own shows, with some very few exceptions..

That is a pretty shocking playlist from what I can see. Very little variety as sticking to whats in the chart. Gets very tiresome with streaming services these day especially since nearly ever song sounds the same with some exceptions.

I do wish they'd play more older tracks from the 90s 00s and 10s. Seems they always stick to the same ones (Not sure how many times I heard golddigger or american boy played when I flick on).
