    Have a few questions.

I was looking at them online and it's very hard to find a 1.6 petrol ? They all seems to be 1.8 or 2 litre. Is there a specific model that is 1.6?

Why would you want a small 1.6 engine in a BMW? It's underpowered and pointless, they stopped selling it years ago.

Pointless why ? The reason I'd rather a 1.6 is obviously cheaper tax and insurance. Are the 1.8s heavy on juice ?

Buying a 1.6l BMW is heresy. Better off to save the cash and get an older 2litre model at the very least or a different car. There's very little difference in mpg between a 1.6 and 1.8litre.

What's your budget, do you want a saloon, coupe, convertible?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,431 ✭✭✭rottie 11

Im saving atm so haven't really set a budget yet. Probably around 1.5k I'd say. There's lots on donedeal for that price fully tested but they all seem to be 2 litre or 2.2.

    Wouldn't want a convertible anyway

I think your missing the point. Why buy any car that is underpowered and cannot pull the skin off a sausage other than it's cheaper to tax and has the right badge? But if you just want a BMW then go for it, I think you will be disappointed soon after.

    Why a petrol?

    BMW's 2L Diesel engine pre 2007 (I think) is a fantastic engine,

I have a 2006 320d M-Sport Auto and it's all the power I need in a car, 220,000 km's later it still drives like new!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,479 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Not everyone wants or needs a rattly load diesel though.

No I don't just want a bmw. I want a good one , but 2.0 litre is definitely too much for me atm. So 1.8 would be the max I could go for, I didn't know the 1.6 was a heap of **** so thanks for letting me know

It doesn't have to be a petrol but all the diesel's I see for sale are alot more expensive

No offence but if you have to save up 1.5k to buy this car, a BMW is not for you. You should probably look at other brands.

I'm not being smart, but cars in this budget are going to be old and require work, a bit of suspension work on a 10+ year old BMW could surpass the entire budget for your car.

Maybe your right but if a car has just passed it's test then surely it doesn't need much work

The motor tax difference between 1.8 and 2.0 is only €40-70. If you went for a lovely 6 cylinder 2.2 litre it does get much more expensive unfortunately.

The NCT wouldn't cover a lot of things though,
Experienced mechanics tell me it's a bit of a joke!!

Thats the problem, the nct does not test everything that can fail. Or it could be within limits at testing time and break a week later

If your budget is only €1500 then you will be looking at the E46 model 3 Series sold from 1998 to 2006. This model never had a 1.6 litre engine fitted to it. Engine ranges are below:

    1998 - 2001 316i - 1.9 litre
    1998 - 2001 318i - 1.9 litre
    1998 - 2001 320i - 2.0 litre

    2001 - 2005 316i - 1.8 litre
    2001 - 2005 318i - 2.0 litre
    2001 - 2005 320i - 2.2 litre

The smallest engine in the coupe was 2.0 litre and badged 318ci.

The NCT focuses on safety. The engine could go bang a week later.

Sorry you want a 4 banger bmw.....straight six petrol or go home.

Honestly what's the point in getting a 316i?
You'd get more satisfaction from an 80 year old granny with no teeth.

Couldn't agree more. I bought a 316 for 4 grand. First oil leak cost me the guts of a grand to fix. It got to a point where it was in the garage once a quarter - all different things. If you want an old BMW, best allow money for plenty of visits to the garage.

Ok lads thanks for the replies but I just rang an insurance broker and asked for a quote on a 1.9 petrol and she gave me a quote of 8k loooool

    She's surely having a laugh . I'm 25 with full licence ?

Have you got a full NCB? how long have you got your full license?

She's obviously not having a laugh, insurance prices have sky rocketed, and there are cars they don't want young lads and lassies driving - so they price them out of the market.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,479 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

A 1500 BMW has the potential to break your heart and wallet unless you really know what you are looking at. Also the NCT is a road worthiness test on a particular day, it is not a guarantee that the car is mechanically sound.

I've a 1 year No claim and a few years as named driver aswel. Well that's that idea gone out the window anyway

The 1.9 petrol is terrible anyway I thinks its only 118bhp. The E46 is probably 1400kg!

BMW? Go big, or go home.

agree, the first car I had was on 00 318ci, that engine was solid enough, but a joke power - wise.

There were probably a lot more 1.6L audi's built around the time of what your budget is allowing Op...

whatever you do, price up insurance on any potential car first!

don't bother just get something cheap to maintain and insure. no point paying out the arse for anything unless it's really fast or really fun. I don't think a 1.9 3 series would be either of those things

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,530 ✭✭✭✭Idbatterim

the guy is 25 lads, your hardly going to go straight into the car of your dreams! Coming from a massive bm fanboi and driver op, I would potentially go with the a3 if you want a german car with badge... The alternatives the op will be looking at, if not going german, it is fair to say, wont be setting the world alight either! 0-100 times of 13 seconds + for the most part...

I'm looking for comfort really. Would like a bit of power but that will have to wait until I can afford and insure something like a gsr

I've had powerful cars before but I'm just looking for a nice solid comfortable car for now. Any other ideas? BTW it doesn't have to be German although a gold would be a good shout imo

She wanted a reg number so I had to on donedeal to find a reg and that was the first one I came across. If that's 8k the rest wouldn't be far off

Il probably get a another huge quote tho. My best bet would be to stick to 1.4 or less I'd say

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

If your budget is only €1500, its hard to recommend much more than a Yaris, Corolla, Fiesta etc. Anything suspension/cooling/injection-wise goes on a German car and you'll be looking at big bucks.

If you're setting aside a seperate budget for maintenance then great, maybe consider one, but I don't think you are.

I'm on my 4th BMW of the year, an E46 330d and it's nowhere near 8 grand to insure and I'm only 21. None of them cost me a fortune in fact they're the most reliable cars I've ever owned, no more expensive to fix than anything else either especially since there is a massive amount of specialist breakers.

I wouldn't bother with a 316i, a 318i might suffice if power isn't what you're after. €1500 would buy a 320d SE though which would be my choice although I'd try get a bit more and get a Sport.
