Hi all. Local garage has a 03 A4 Quattro estate on the lot. Leather interior etc . 190000 miles on the clock. Diesel. Any known problems with these, DMF, 4wd system etc? Or am I mad to even bother asking the price? It's a VW main dealer, so I expect them to be fairly saucey on the price!

    1.9 or 2.5?

The 130bhp is generally a reliable engine but at 190k there is a list of things that should have been done, if there is evidence of timing belt/water pump changes and and a clutch and fly wheel change then it could be a good deal, suspension arms are also another item that can rack up a big bill quickly if you need to change them all.

quattro is a torsen set up and has no servicable parts and is pretty bullet proof, saying that at 190k an oil change in the diff couldn't do any harm.

Electrics can give trouble the 2 main causes are drainage chambers under the battery getting blocked and the CCM (central convenience module) getting wet. the other one is the wires in the loom going into the doors can become brittle and break causing windows etc to stop working on that door.

Depending on spec at that mileage 3/4 k is the type of money i'd be expecting to pay.

My friend has a 02 1.9 TDI est (non quarto) for 5 years and claim to have never opened the bonnet of it in 70K miles only for windscreen washer fluid, not a single service, Ive no reason not to believe him.
He bought it with 130K miles and the dealer said that after 130 miles and & 8 yrs the original timing belt was well over due and to get it done ASAP, this wasn't done since either.

    True story

Imagine how great it would be if it got an oil change regularly too.

It's going to cost your friend around 2 grand to open the bonnet one day

I have a 1.9 tdi ,1996 ,afn engine, paid £1050 for it in 2008, timing belt broke once due to the t belt cover rubbing off the belt and breaking it , bent all 8 valve and bust the hydraulic shims or whatever they're called .

2nd hand shims , 8 new valves and stem seals and headgasket plus t belt kit cost me €360 and a day of my time to get it fixed , still going strong 50k later with 230 indicated on the clock , I suspect it may have had a bit of clock adjustment prior to my getting it.

Best value car I ever bought. Have a 08 avant 1.9 B7 now hope it lasts as long.

    Sry way off topic.

Just to add on topic the a4 quattro 1.9tdi does about 40mpg v 50 mpg for non quattro .
