All depends on what price you get when they are turning 13mts and the last 90 days if you are going for u16 mts. Once you go beyond that there is no turning back as castration at that stage is very hard on the animal. Anything you rear yourself will be easy handle until about 14mts after that they can get tempermental but at that stage you'll have them dosed on 8kg finishing meal so that should keep them quiet. Bull beef works well on out of spec animals that wouldn't do well in mart but have big frames that will carry flesh. You'd want to have them on a high protein feed until a yr old then gradually up the intake with finishing meal with loads of fibre in the diet. For the last 60dys you will need little or no protein in the diet as you will need to put as much flesh on them as possible. A molaases based maize, soya hulls and barley meal would do and build them up to 14kg per day for last 30 days on straw only. Take away silage for last 40 days but have straw at their nose all the timeso they are used to earing it as meal on its own will scour them. Brought a big boney brown BAx that I reared to weanling sale last oct at 11mts old weighed 465kg lw and got bid 780. Took him home and at 15mts in feb made 1365 in factory.

Im doing it the last 7 years. Only doing around 30-35 every year. You need good strong gates around them. I finish mine on a straw bed instead of slats. I find them easier to handle than heifers as their less flighty. Only give them ad lib meal for 100 - 120 days depending on the breed
