Hi folks, Pudsey mentioned DA retention period?
What exactly is this and what implications does it have?

I think it's minimum stocking rate for disadvantage area. Not 100% he'll be on himself shortly if I'm wrong.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Yes it is, Pudsey's point was it is holding up lads from selling so all stock are hitting marts at same time. March/april buyers this is usually oct/nov. Excellent for factory agents around the ring. Here is more info on it:

The stocking rate is 0.15 LU/Hectare for 7 months. A ewe is 0.15 LU, a bovine or a horse/donkey from 6 months to 24 months is 0.6 LU and when they are over 2 years they are a full livestock unit.

Any horse or donkey has to be micro chipped I think and registered as with you. If you had a 50 acre farm which equates to 20HA you would need 20 ewes or 6 yearling or three cattle over 2 years of age. However mot lads have a bit more in case anything happens to an animal

As far as I know horses/ponies have to be registered with one of the stud books that is approved by the Dept of Agri - RID, Connemara Ponies etc.
    Not sure about donkeys.
