Just saw on line that they have announced a new presenter for saturday nite show from 7pm-12am.

This presenter is only 16 so clearly the powers that be in there do not realize it is illegal to hire anyone under the age of 18 past 10pm in this country.

A link would be helpful. Also I thought when Adrien Kennedy was on air he was breaking copy right laws by broadcast YouTube videos without the owners consent?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 141 ✭✭TheLonelyOne

    1. how do you know he is 16?
    2. maybe it was a typo?
    3. maybe some of his show will be pre-recorded?
    4. i'd doubt fm104 would be that stupid to break the law.

A relation of mine is in school with him. All in favor for new talent but when it comes to the stature of limitations for u18 it would seem fm104 need to read up on this one.

Stupidity at it's finest may be?

The only laws that fool breaks are the laws of good taste.

That's not what "statute of limitations" means.

Does anyone know is it possible to get an exemption to the relevant law with the cooperation of the parents?

I am sure they are not breaking the law and know his age. Sure there's people hired in media underage all the time, its called an exceptional circumstances and I assume him and his parents also FM104 have documents waving these rights. I think you need to relax with your gruge against this guy mate to be honest.

Five hours is the longest stint I've ever seen for a radio show.

"The working hours for young people are regulated by the Protection of Young Persons (Employment) Act 1996. The Act sets maximum working hours, rest intervals and prohibits the employment of young people aged under 18 in late night work."

    www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employment/starting_work_and_changing_job/young_people_at_work/hours_of_work_for_young_people.html

Limits on night work and early morning work

In general, young people aged 16 and 17 are not allowed to work before 6am in the morning or after 10pm at night. Any exceptions to this rule must be provided by regulation.

The Protection of Young Persons Act 1996 (Employment in Licensed Premises) Regulations 2001 (SI 350/2001) permits young people employed on general duties in a licensed premises to be required to work up to 11 pm on a day that does not immediately precede a school day during a school term where the young person is attending school. The Regulations state that the definition of general duties “does not include supplying intoxicating liquor from behind the bar counter in licensed premises or supplying it for consumption off those premises”.

There are vast exemptions to working age restrictions in the entertainment industry. Not sure if it applies here but it may

No grudge at all mate from what I have heard he is quite good on air so you are barking up the wrong tree with that one.

If memory serves me right Jenny Greene was also 16 when she started on FM104.
Anyone who thinks they are going to make money or a career out of it needs to look long and hard at the road ahead because its a long one to the big dollars nowadays. Its not like it used to be.

Maybe they're just passionate about broadcasting and enjoy doing it?

How long ago was that though as no doubt nearly all of us started working in our early teens but obvs the law has become more strict since then hence why fm104 will be breaking the law

Why do you care? If you had your way you would deny a kid a great opportunity to break into radio?

He is a minor and that is why I care but clearly it does not bother you in the least

    Nearly there lol
Then at 17 Jenny was given her own weekly dance column in The Sunday World newspaper. That same year she became the youngest DJ on radio landing the Weekend Breakfast Show on Dublin station FM104.

Hours of employment for u18 are 6am to 10pm

Weekend breakfast would I presume start at 6am therefore breaking no laws

labour laws dont really exist in ireland anymore. its a free for all now. sure minimum wage doesnt even stand and zero hour contracts are great arent they?

Title could be defamatory. Op is speculating on the the legal circumstance of the case, with providing anything by way supporting legal expertise.

No it doesn't bother me in the slightest because I see his point of view of how happy he is to be 16 and have his own radio show! Why don't you ring Chris Barry later and make a complaint or is being a SJW on boards the best you can do?

Couldn't agree more, FM104 are not dragging him in by the ear to the studio and whipping the sh!te out of him chanting 'one more tune'.

It's just another one of them *puts head in hands* post

I think it is great that they have given him a show at such a young age. Have heard him and think he has bags of potential but I do think fm104/utv need to be more responsible when it comes to having kids working for them

They are breaking the law and you know it

If the OP is so concerned, why not contact the station and point it out? If they have not already realised it, then you'll be doing them a favour. They can then do whatever workaround is necessary. Pre-recording is the most obvious option.

    End of

But its not end of. How do you know 100% they are breaking the law have you proof. As a poster said yesterday it may be prerecorded or as numerous people have said here they may have an exemption. You can't say for certain that the law is broken. You sound like a disgruntled person who has a grudge with the station

    End of
prove it. UTV will have lawyers themselves, so i think they will know whether they are breaking the law or not. if you want, consider reporting it to the relevant authorities, or get over it. no point in whinging about it on here

I'm very highly educated. I know words, i have the best words, nobody has better words then me.

How many links are in the final two hours of the show? Incredibly easy to just prerecord a few while songs are playing earlier in the show and make it sound like the show is still live after 10. Could even be the case that the final two hours are a mix created during the week and just thrown onto the system.

Plus, the quoted legislation above says that exemptions are possible.

So basically, this thread is pointless because we don't know the terms of the guy's contract. If the OP feels they are breaking the law, contact the Gardai or the station. Bitching about it on Boards is just pointless nattering.
