Who/when to follow up after interview?

A week ago, I interviewed for a position in a very large public sector organisation. The interview was arranged by an executive assistant over the phone, and two heads of the department were my interviewers. HR weren't involved at all so far.

It's a maternity leave position, and they mentioned that they're looking to have the new person start quite soon. I said I'd need to give 2 weeks notice, but that I could be flexible with that, and they said "On no, two weeks is very quick". I also happen to know that I was the last person on the interview schedule because I was out of town for a bit.

I stupidly forgot to ask about a timeline for hearing back. I sent an email to my two interviewers a couple of days later to say thanks, but I haven't heard anything to date. I really want this job. I'm thinking I should follow up soon, just for my own sanity, but who do I get in touch with? One of the interviewers? The assistant who set up the interview? Ordinarily I'd speak to HR, but as I said, they haven't been involved at all so far.

    Thanks!

A week is a long time when you are on the job hunt.

And as it is a 9month plus cover role time is not a plaything.

I would give them a quick email/call to follow up. Just say you are interested and seeing if it is available.
