Have you been filling from mickey mouse fuel stations or main brands?

Yes, it's not unheard of. Around border counties at less "careful" garages you can get all kind of strange concoctions in the diesel.

Mind, it could have been something else and the mechanic might have given the diesel the blame.

I wouldn't just believe much of what your mechanic told you, they spout this line regularly, especially with new cars

Any mechanic who says "dirty diesel" without sending a sample off for an independent lab analysis is simply a clown.

3,500 for a fuel pump and two injectors for a 2010 skoda?
    Are they platinum or gold?

Most of the cost was probably plugging in the diagnostics equipment to recode the injectors. Typical mechanic response is "jaysis this is fierce difficult, the computer could blow the car up!!!"

I'm still not seeing how it cost three and a half grand to do that!
As for the mechanic, why go there if that is your idea of him?

Diesel has tiny bits of dirt in it. Over a while this builds up. Add in some diesel from end of a garage tank or just after a delivery, then over time it can cause issues.

    To avoid it, it's simple.

Fill to near full and continue to drive til near empty as often as possible.

"mechanics" always trot out the dirty diesel line, but even basic knowledge of fuel and engines would give the correct info.

Bs, all diesel engines have filters to catch any dirt.

It's nasty residual chemicals from diesel washing that can cause the damage.

@op, time to find another mechanic as he fleeced you.

How would doing that make a difference?

its stops build-up of sludge over the longer term. Even some handbooks tell you to do this (most people don;t read their handbook though)

Another reason for engine failure is not serviceing diesel engine - air and fuel filters have to be changed regularly as per service schedule.

    This gives more info

A lot of the laundered Diesel garages around the border and further south have all shut shop since the new regs for getting marked diesel came into force.

I filled up on Tesco diesel from the station in Bailieborough and fir the next week the car was a nightmare to start. Would take 4-5 attempts

Next fill I used my local Topaz

A few weeks later I was passing thro Bailieborough again and needed filling. Had the same issues with problem starting for the next week til I ran it through and topped up again with Topaz

its been fine since so going to avoid the Tesco (well that particular station) anyway

Since the diesel launderers have been curtailed by the introduction of the radio active marked green and red, there seems to be a move towards dilution with kerosene. I know several users report that there was a marked drop in power after using a local supplier (who has branched all along the north west and into cavan) and a smell off the exhaust just like the central heating burner.
