Duty Free

    Hi,

I'm going to Vancouver next month.

The route to Vancouver will be DUB->LHR->YVR all on the same day.
The route back to Dublin will be YVR->DFW->LHR->DUB again all on the same day.

I have a couple of questions:

    1. Will I be able to buy duty free alcohol in Dublin airport when I fly to London Heathrow where I will connect with my flight to Vancouver. Will I have to go through security in Heathrow ? If so, will they confiscate any liquids I have as carry-on ?

    2. On my return to Dublin I will be flying Vancouver to Dallas where I will connect with a flight to London. Again, will I be able to buy Duty Free liquids in Vancouver or Dallas or will they be confiscated in Dallas (if I buy in Vancouver)/London (if I buy in Dallas) ?

    Many thanks for any help.

    Anthony

In Dublin they have Shop and Collect so you could leave the liquids for collection on return (unless you are using them on holiday).

If you are transiting then my experience has been that the bags are sealed and provided they stay sealed and do not exceed Customs limits where you are headed then there are no issues at security.

Thanks for the reply - I think Shop and Collect is only for passengers travelling within the EU. As I'm flying to Vancouver (and only transiting through Heathrow) I don't think I'll qualify.

You won't be able to buy duty free alcohol in Dublin as your not leaving the EU on your Dublin flight, you will be able to buy duty free alcohol in London Heathrow instead as this flight will exit the EU.

I think you would be able to buy duty free alcohol in both Vancouver and Dallas but if it was me I would get it in Dallas. Get the person in the duty free shop to place the bottle in the tamper proof bag, this will allow you get through security in London if you have to pass through it.

Shop and Collect doesn't work with duty free alcohol or tobacco as it is for flights within the EU only.

The excise rate in Texas is $2.40 per us gallon for spirits, so its about 45 cents a bottle of whiskey.
So I wouldn't worry about duty or duty free there.

I had no problem buying in Dublin and transiting through Heathrow to the US. The bag just had to remain sealed and ticket to US shown.

But was it duty free you got or did you pay full price? Any time I have tried the boarding card must be checked that it is from that airport direct to a non EU airport in order to get at duty free price.

Duty Free price upon showing onward ticket with no hassle.
