Can you travel to Athlone from Dublin, and return from Mullingar on a return ticket from IÉ?

Looking at the new greenway linking the 2 places opening soon.

    See Appendix 1 here: www.irishrail.ie/media/conditionsoftravel1.pdf

You would need to buy a ticket for the longer leg of the journey. Note Mullingar trains operate from Connolly, but Athlone trains from Heuston.

that appendix would suggest a ticket on the Westport line is valid to return on the Sligo line, but not vice-versa. Seems strange?

Seems similar for trips on the Dublin Rosslare line.

Might be because those lines are singletrack and have a lower fare charging basis. Or maybe looking at the lack of a forward slash on the Dublin Waterford line, an oversight/sloppy carelessness.
