so i have my driving test tomorrow and the engine light has come on and i cant get it off, the car has just been nct'd and passed, brought it to my mechanic but he said it was a loose wire and the car is perfect so doesnt see why it would be a problem,

so now i am really nervous that i won't be able to do the test, have not come across a post online with someone refused because of this, and on the rsa leaflet it only says the may not do it, any suggestions?

Try and get it repaired or even disconnected in the morning as it's most unlikely the test will be conducted if (when) the tester notices it.
You might also try a bit of black tape over it but the testers are usually on to that one too.

Most warning lights mean an NCT fail so if it passed and your mechanic reckons it's okay then you should chance it. For example, if it's a blown bulb warning but all the bulbs are working then I think any reasonable person would let it slide.

Are you sure it's the engine management warning light because I'm pretty sure this is an instant NCT fail?

then tell him not enough time to get anything checked as it only came on while on my way to test centre, make sure oil and water are ok.

you cant disconnect things like that as its all computer related and as car has no stress symptoms like driving on 3 cylinders.

say its going into garage the next day for checking.

It's only an NCT fail on diesels as they won't do a smoke test

Petrols with the engine warning light will pass the NCT even with it on

i have an obd reader so knocked it of before the nct, and it stayed of for a few days, now it wont stay off because it is a sensor thing that keeps turning it back on almost instantly, i could try knocking it off as the instructor is walking around the car, maybe!

    You'll be refused test

    You'll be refused test

Really, have you seen this before, it's not an abs light or anything just an engine management light

Where are you based OP? If it's in Kildare I can remove the code for you with my diagnostics but it only works on VAG cars.

I'd just tell the tester, if he questions it, that it's a faulty bulb and you plugged it in and it's a faulty reading or something like that but your dad/uncle etc has ordered you a new bulb or unit.

Best of luck with the test.

Yes, loads of times. A tester commented to me a few months ago, "I hate having to do it as it's probably only an emissions sensor or something but it's a rule and we've been told to apply it."

If the light at start or comes on during the test it is a Fail and return to test center. My driving instructor told me several cases this happen and before my test maybe 30 mins to down check lights bulbs and lights on the dash.

It's actually a "test refusal" as opposed to a fail

I know a person who's petrol light was on and she was refused the test. Better to be safe than sorry. If I was you I'd get it sorted today. Otherwise it could be €85 down the drain.

Congratulations. I had a pupil whose engine warning light came on intermittently. I asked an examiner if it came on during the test would he cancel. He said "If she was doing OK I might not notice".

You must have impressed him mighty with the questions/answers :)

    The official guidelines
Where ignition warning lights do not come on when the ignition is switched on, it is not in order to proceed with the test. However, see Office Notice 7/2004 for where a warning light does come on, and stays on after the engine has been started.

Never sighted notice 7/2004, but the examiners do use their discretion for some warning lights.

I had seen this before the test also and was looking for this notice, and even said it to my instructor, he had never heard of notice 7/2004..
