I've booked my 2011 Saab 9-3 1.9 TTiD in for this service. They gave me a price of €95 for an Oil change, oil filter, fuel filter and air filter. This Saab needs 0W-40 oil which I gather is quite expensive in comparison to other oils. The skeptic in me is worried as it would appear that the service items alone would cost €95 if not more.

Should I be concerned or just grab the offer with both hands as a steal?

You could always see what sort of price they give you for an '07 Focus 1.4 petrol, for example.
If it's pretty much the same price then I think we both know what oil your Saab isn't getting........

I'm surprised that includes a fuel filter too, that seems to cheap for all that. And unless you specify the spec a 0w40, I would think they could just be putting any oil into it.

That price is almost certainly for "standard" 10W-40 oil, so you would probably need to first check how much extra it would cost for them to fill it with 0W-40 instead. I've availed of a similar offer and they specifically asked if my car needed anything 'better' than standard 10W-40, as in that case there would be a an uplift in the price...

Personally I think your car is too new to start messing about with the wrong oils for the sake of a minor saving, so talk to them before you let them do anything.

The particular offer is €75 for standard oils, €85 for semi synthetic and €95 for fully synthetic. When I called and made the booking I specifically stated that it was 0W-40 oil that it took and I was told that they 'have all the oils'.

I'm conscious that the car is relatively new and that these twin turbo Saabs need some extra loving compared to other cars. That is indeed why I not completely sold on the offer.

I wouldn't believe that, or I'd at least be wary. Realistically there's no way you're going to know what oil has been put into it. But for that price, and inclusion of a fuel filter, it would seem mad that any garage could offer premium spec oil on top of all that.

Looking at GSF prices, an oil filter for this is €19.29, an air filter is €23.59 and a fuel filter is €30.77 (with an alternative @ €51.29).
Then add a few litres of 0W40.
Then add labour (60 minutes altogether including admin?)

Even at trade prices, I can't see how they would turn a profit on €95.

I would also be concious of the quality of the parts. Even some of the GSF oil filters can be poor quality IMO.

My own belief is that there is almost no chance that there is room for profit here. Is it a loss leader? A chance to make some money by identifying other issues that can be repaired/replaced? Future business?

My gut feeling right now is not to risk it.

My local mechanic will do with same service with the addition of the pollen filter using top spec Mobil 1 turbo diesel OW-40 for €170. More expensive yes but my mind will be at ease.

I think I'll play it safe and go with that.

With a fuel filter? That's a good price. You can forget the other price, as it had no basis in reality imo.

Yeah. Fuel, oil, air and pollen filters. Mobil 1 0W40.

    Thanks all for your inputs.

Service could be FREE of charge, I would not even set foot at this kind of place to get my car serviced
