Payments and bad credit

    Hi All,

Hoping somebody can answer a couple of questions I have on personal credit, mainly regarding a credit card.

I had a credit card which was revoked about 3 years ago, hands up, not making excuses, I was irresponsible and was moving around the country for work and just didn't pay it, I should have.

Anyway, I'm now in a secure fairly well paid job and I'm trying to clean up past mistakes and clean up my credit rating with a view to applying for a mortgage down the line, no immediate plans, but would like to have the option in a couple of years.

Question is, on my credit report the card is showing as revoked and then completed and due to come off my record at the beginning of 2018, which to be honest is fine by me, I wouldn't be looking for mortgages before then anyway as I need to work on saving a large deposit. Despite all this, I called BOI today to pay off the old credit card, happy to just pay over the phone from my debit card or whatever, but they told me that the card debt has been sent out to Intrum Justicia the debt collection agency :(, who I haven't heard anything from since the card was revoked, no calls, no letters, nothing.

I was happy to pay BOI directly but I'm not too keen on engaging with a debt collection agency as I don't think this will impact my credit rating in any positive way (if at all) and as far as the credit rating agency is concerned the account is cleared? Also it seems as if the debt collectors just haven't bothered pursuing this.

I suppose the overall question here is should I engage with Intrum Justicia and pay the debt? I can afford to pay it. Or should I just leave it and only engage with them if they contact me. The account as far as I am aware is showing as complete with the ICB, and I'm not sure that anything I do with Intrum will help my credit at all.

Also, just a general question, not really specific to me but just wondering, say I have a loan that has been "written off" on a credit report, if the last activity on this was, say 2 years ago, so due to come off ICB in 3 years, if I start a payment plan with a company now would this then 'reactivate' the loan and put it back to being 5 years on my record?

Sorry for all the questions and I appreciate any input anyone might have.

    Thanks.

OK so I suppose from that you are thinking I should not bother contacting IJ?
